Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White today writes that the “Kindle Fire” tablet computer unveiled today by Amazon.com (AMZN) is “hardly an iPad killer,” contrary to rumors to that effect leading up to the event. He expects Apple (AAPL) to maintain its edge in tablets.
The aesthetic aspects of the Fire, writes White, are “tired” and “pale in comparison” to the iPad 2.
“Our initial take on the”Kindle Fire” is that the product lacks the enhanced capabilities, aesthetics, power and rich features found on the iPad 2, which is why the price point of $199 is below the $499 entry point for the iPad 2,” writes White.
“We find the 7-inch screen too small for a tablet device as Steve Jobs has previously highlighted, while the lack of a 3G connection will keep consumers confined to a Wi-Fi world.”
White maintains a Buy rating on Apple shares and a $666 price target.
