Hot Gas Stocks To Own Right Now

The idea of natural gas vehicles has been kicked around for years in the United States. With the recent surge in domestic natural gas production, though, natural gas cars are becoming an even more possible scenario. The idea is gathering enough steam that the International Energy Agency believes that natural gas vehicles will almost double their market share within the next five years. Granted, a doubling of a 1.4% market share isn't much, but for companies in the business of natural gas transportation, it's a big jump.

Considering the effort required to build out a fueling infrastructure for natural gas vehicles, a five-year time horizon is pretty short, and not much should be expected during that time. Also, as fool.com contributor Tyler Crowe describes in this video, not all vehicles are created equal. Tyler explains how natural gas is pursuing a certain segment of the vehicle industry and talks about what it will take to bring natural gas vehicles to the mainstream.

Non-traditional MLPs like Susser and Lehigh Gas Partners (NYSE: LGP) have risks and opportunities that are different from the midstream mainstream. Such MLPs can provide some diversification from the midstream MLPs that make up the bulk of the space, with less commodity and execution risk than most upstream partnerships. On the other hand, they are unlikely to have the same potential upside and growth opportunities as most midstream names. I might consider Susser as part a broader portfolio of MLPs, but it wouldn’t be a core holding in my own portfolio.

Advisors' Opinion:

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL  ) turned heads last year when it announced that it was purchasing a refinery in Trainer, Pa., in order to hedge against high jet fuel refining premiums. Many energy industry experts were puzzled because refinery expert Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX  ) was planning to shut the refinery if it could not find a buyer. Analysts reasoned that if it was uneconomic for a seasoned refiner like Phillips 66 to operate the refinery, it made even less sense for a newcomer like Delta to run it.

Tesoro Logistics LP(TLLP), a company spun off in 2011 by oil refiner Tesoro Corp.(TSO), agreed to pay its former parent $650 million to acquire Los Angeles assets that include two marine terminals and a pipeline system.

  • [By John Divine]

Tesoro (NYSE: TSO  ) , which won't present investors with the opportunity to be disappointed until August 1, slumped 3.8% today. The oil refiner also fell big time on Tuesday after its peer, Marathon Petroleum, gave its investors a heads-up that second-quarter financial results weren't going to be quite as peachy as expected. The announcement sparked fears that Marathon's warning would translate to a difficult quarter for Tesoro, as well. Keeping in mind that Tesoro's shares are more than twice as volatile as the larger market, today's 3.8% losses look more like a commonplace occurrence than a fundamental setback.

  • [By John Divine]

Oil refiner Tesoro (NYSE: TSO  ) lost 2.9% today, on a day when the oil and gas sector, as a whole, was the worst performing of the 10 major sectors. Tesoro is reeling from a recent shutdown in a Washington state refinery earlier this week after a leak was discovered. Thankfully, the issue has been resolved, but the 125,000-barrel-per-day refinery lost some meaningful business in the process.

These network elements also provide access to voicemail and other value-added services, base stations (for CDMA) or eNodeBs (for 4G LTE), cell sites or distributed antenna system (DAS), nodes, and backhaul facilities, which carry traffic to and from its cell sites and its switching or enhanced packet core facilities, consisting of a combination of dedicated circuits, cable, fiber, and microwave facilities.

Its cell sites in the network are co-located, meaning its equipment is located on leased facilities that are owned by third parties who retain the right to lease the locations to additional carriers and in many cases other wireless broadband mobi! le servic! e providers already hav e facilities at such locations. The switching centers and na! tional op! erations center provide around-the-clock monitoring of its network. Its switches connect to the public switched telephone network through fiber rings leased from third-parties, which transmit originating and terminating traffic between its equipment and local exchange and long distance carriers. It also has negotiated interconnection agreements with relevant local exchange carriers, or LECs, in its service areas. It uses third-party providers for domestic and international long distance services, international SMS interconnection with the public switched network and other carriers, roaming services, and the majority of its backhaul services.

The Company competes with AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile USA , Deutsche Telekom, Clearwire, Dish Network , Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox Communications, Cricket Communications, Leap Wireless International and Google.

Advisors' Opinion:

While Apple and Samsung are obviously the most directly affected by the decision, AT&T (NYSE: T  ) and T-Mobile (NYSE: TMUS  ) will also feel the impact. While other carriers sell versions of the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 3G, only the models specific to these two carriers were subjects of the case. The ban, therefore, will limit each of these carriers ability to sell these devices and could limit choices, specifically of lower-priced options, for each. The offending devices carried on other networks were not specifically addressed, although Samsung reserved the right to seek action against these in the future.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Infosys (NYSE: INFY  ) will release its quarterly earnings report next Monday, but investors are already skittish about how well the IT services company will be able to perform. In a sluggish environment for global economic growth generally and for IT spending in particular, the entire outsourcing and consulting industry has felt the pressure, and as a primary beneficiary of more positive trends in the industry over the years, Infosys is potentially vulnerable to a reversal in those trends.

Overall, the most popular emerging market ETFs experienced much sharper declines than the less-than-1% drop the Dow posted this week. Vanguard Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: VWO  ) and iShares Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: EEM  ) were both down just under 3% for the week. But when you drill down to look for particular culprits in the emerging markets, you don't have to look very far to find that it was generally a broad-based decline:

In China, more concerns about a slowdown in the manufacturing industry put pressure on stocks. The Shanghai index didn't move much, but one key ETF tracking the Chinese market sank nearly 4% in response to the news, largely on weakness in telecom giant China Mobile (NYSE: CHL  ) , which plays a commanding role in many emerging market-focused ETFs.
Indian stocks suffered from some of the same macroeconomic issues, with the Bombay market's index down about 3% and ETF tracking the market falling 4% to 5%. The Indian finance minister responded to the decline, which many blamed on Fed Chair Ben Bernanke's comments, by saying, "We think that Bernanke's statement has been misunderstood or misinterpreted." Yet that didn't seem to appease investors in outward-directed industries like Infosys (NYSE: INFY  ) , whose IT offerings require health activity levels not just in India but in the U.S. and other customer-heavy countries as well.
Stocks in Mexico suffered declines of almost 5%, retracing some ground after an extraordinarily strong stretch of gains on optimism about the country's ability to reinvigorate its economy beyond its core reliance on petroleum and to resolve ongoing conflicts with drug cartels.

But there were some relatively bright spots in other emerging markets. Brazilian stocks were actually up a bit on the week, as the nation found itself better insulated from all the happenings in Asia related to China and Japan. Russian stocks also remained relatively stable,

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bram de Haas]

Trading at a P/E (TTM) of 16 the company is not cheap at first glance, yet given all the information indicating significant earnings growth in 2013 the multiple of 16 becomes much less threatening. There is also the book value of about $10 / share and the recent offer by Landry of $22 a share to add some insurance on the downside. Given current earnings the valuation may be in line, but given the prospects of earnings increasing significantly, the stock is worth more.

Pfizer Net Income Growth Is Increasing Leading to Increase in Its Operating Margins

Net incomes and operating margins of a company give some insights into its financial health. Pfizer net income growth has accelerated this year. In fact, when compared with its direct competitors like Merck, Novartis, and Sanofi, the rate of increase of net income growth trailing twelve months (TTM) is greatest at Pfizer with $10.68 billion followed by Novartis with $9.37 billion while Merck and Sanofi lagged behind with $4.53 billion and $4.05 billion respectively. Really, rather than increasing, there has been a decrease in Merck and Sanofi net incomes this year which should be a source of concern for investors. A healthy operating margin shows that a company is earning more per dollar of sales and, hence, able to pay for its fixed costs including interest on debt.

Cronut creator unveils ice cream sundae in a can

sundae in a can NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Cronut imitators, take note!

The chef behind the infamous Cronut, Dominique Ansel, announced his newest concoction: an ice cream sundae ... in a can.

The "Pop It" dessert was devised in collaboration with designer Lisa Perry to celebrate art and pop culture.

"For someone less gourmet, it tastes like a souped-up root beer float," said a spokeswoman for Dominique Ansel Bakery.

But for those with more refined palettes, there's quite a bit of culinary genius that went into these sundaes. There's root beer and stracciatella ice cream, mascarpone semifreddo and macerated cherries, a meringue kiss and marshmallows (to help keep the ice cream from turning into a frozen block). The cans are lined with chocolate and sealed in a pop-top lid, channeling Andy Warhol's classic soup cans.

Ansel is all about creativity and inventions (he changes up his menu every six to eight weeks) -- but don't expect to see this dessert on his New York City bakery's revolving menu. The sundaes will be sold for one day only on Saturday, August 2 -- in the Hamptons, N.Y. And only 500 will be available for purchase.

Other inventions of Ansel's -- like the Cronuts ($5), Frozen S'mores ($7) and Cookie Shots ($3) -- have been major moneymakers. The bakery consistently attracts 100 to 200 people as early as 6 a.m. every morning, waiting to taste his treats.

But with the "Pop It" sundaes, Ansel isn't hoping for another moneymaker. In fact, according to the spokeswoman, they don't expect any profit to be generated. 20% of the proceeds from the $15 sundae will be donated to City Harvest, a New York food rescue organization.

Ansel has long tried to use his culinary expertise for good causes, according to his spokeswomen. In February, Barney's New York hosted a one day only Cronut pop-up shop; proceeds benefited the Heart of Los Angeles, a nonprofit that helps under-served youth.

So, will someone else steal Ansel's canned sundae idea to turn a profit?

"I don't think he'd be surprised either way," said the spokeswoman.

10 Best Freight Stocks To Buy Right Now

Thanks largely to the antics of former CEO Aubrey McClendon, Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) has been one of the most maligned names in the energy sector. McClendon leveraged the company's future with debt, intertwined his personal finances with the company's, and engineered a land-buying program that received significant amounts of bad press topped off with negative portrayal of the industry in Matt Damon's movie, "Promised Land." The result has been a nearly 40% slide in Chesapeake Energy stock over the past two years.

CHK data by YCharts

Natural gas on the rise
Despite the bad press, the overall position of the natural gas industry has never looked more promising. Companies ranging from Clean Energy Fuels (NASDAQ: CLNE  ) to Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A  ) are beginning to initiate programs that rely heavily on natural gas. In the case of Clean Energy, the company is undertaking a major push to create a corridor of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, filling stations across the country to allow trucks to carry freight on LNG power rather than diesel. This type of transition is likely to eventually trickle down to passenger vehicles, which currently are not fully viable as an LNG alternative. While Chesapeake Energy stock once benefited from the company's partial ownership of Clean Energy, that stake is likely to be sold to help meet debt obligations.

Shares of Heartland Express (HTLD) rose today despite being cut by Stifel Nicolaus for valuation reasons.

    Bloomberg News

Shares of Heartland Express have gained 50% this year, trumping the 38% rise in Con-Way (CNW) and the 29% advance in J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) but lagging Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL) and Swift Transportation (SWFT).

That big gain was enough for Stifel’s John Larkin say no mas and cut his rating on Heartland Express. They explain why:

Downgrading from Buy to Hold as the company’s shares appear fully and fairly valued. In fact, shares have recently traded through our 12-month fair value estimate of $19 (or 16.0x our 2015 EPS estimate of $1.15 plus ~$0.68 per share NPV of future cash tax benefits).

Rating change is primarily valuation based as well as from our view that most transportation equities are trading ahead of the still mediocre underlying freight market fundamentals.

BB&T’s Thomas Albrecht and team, who upgraded Heartland Express to Buy from Hold yesterday, explain why they think the stock will do just fine regardless of the economy:

Heartland is an intriguing play upon both a slow-growth economy and a rapidly growing one (along with tight capacity). Many carriers are only able to thrive in the latter environment. With HTLD we believe that even in a sluggish economy it has a self-generating EPS story through the integration and growth of Gordon. Q3’13, a very difficult quarter for TL carriers, saw HTLD post a 79.3% OR versus 83.3%.

The timing of the Gordon deal seems ideal, similar to the Great Coastal acquisition in mid-2002. Back then the TL market was stabilizing, but had yet to really take off, which occurred in the back half of 2003. Those 4-5 quarters allowed HTLD to assess customers, integrate operations, consolidate facilities and get ready for the next cycle. By the time that occurred HTLD was ready to take advantage of the capacity

LTL carriers transport shipments from multiple shippers utilizing a network of freight service centers combined with a fleet of line-haul and pickup-and-delivery tractors and trailers. Freight is picked up from customers and consolidated for shipment at the originating service center. Freight is consolidated for transportation to the destination service centers or freight assembly centers. At Freight assembly centers, freight from various service centers can be reconsolidated for transportation to other freight assembly centers or destination service centers. From the destination service center, the freight is delivered to the customer. Typically, LTL shipments weigh between 100 and 15,000 pounds. In 2011, Con-way Freight average weight per shipment was 1,305 pounds.

Logistics

The Logistics segment consists of the operating results o! f the Menlo Worldwide Logistics business unit. Menlo Worldwide Logistics develops contract-logistics solutions, which can include managing complex distribution networks, and providing supply-chain engineering and consulting, and multimodal freight brokerage services. Menlo Worldwide Logisticssupply-chain management offerings are primarily related to transportation-management and contract-warehousing services. Transportation management refers to the management of asset-based carriers and third-party transportation providers for customersinbound and outbound supply-chain needs through the use of logistics management systems to consolidate, book and track shipments. Contract warehousing refers to the optimization and operation of warehouses for customers using technology and warehouse-management systems to reduce inventory carrying costs and supply-chain cycle times. For several customers, contract-warehousing operations include light assembly or kitting operations.

Menlo Worldwide Logistics provides its services using a customer- or project-based approach when the supply-chain solution requires customer-specific transportation management, single-client warehouses, and/or single-customer technological solutions. However, Menlo Worldwide Logistics also utilizes a shared-resource, process-based approach that leverages a centralized transportation-management group, multi-client warehouses and technology to provide scalable solutions to multiple customers. Additionally, Menlo Worldwide Logistics segments its business based on customer type. At December 31, 2011, Menlo Worldwide Logistics operated 76 warehouses in North America, of which 55 were leased by Menlo Worldwide Logistics and 21 were leased or owned by clients of Menlo Worldwide Logistics. Con-way Truckload provides dry-van transportation services to manufacturing, industrial and retail customers while using single drivers as well as two-person driver teams over long-haul routes, with each trailer containing only one customer goods. This origin-to-destination freight movement limits intermediate handling and is not dependent on the same network of locations utilized by LTL carriers. On average, Con-way Truckload transports shipments more than 800 miles from origin to destination. Under its regional service offering, Con-way Truckload transports truckload shipments of less than 600 miles, including local-area service for truckload shipments of less than 100 miles.

Con-way Truckload offers through-trailer service into and out of Mexico through all major gateways in Texas, Arizona and California. At December 31, 2011, Con-way Truckload operated five owned terminals with bulk fuel, tractor and trailer parking, and in some cases, equipment maintenance and washing facilities. In addition, Con-way Truckload also utilizes various drop yards for temporary trailer storage throughout the United States. Wunderlich’s Nicholas Bender thinks FedEx’s results bode well for Old Dominion (ODFL), Con-way (CNW) and Saia (SAIA):

We expect all less-than-truckload carriers to benefit in 2Q14 from the same trends that carried FedEx Freight to a banner 4Q14. This includes Hold-rated Old Dominion, which will continue to grow at well above market rates, and Buy-rated Con-way, which we believe can leverage a strong 2Q14 to prime the pump on margin enhancement efforts. Our favorite name in the space remains Saia (SAIA-$42.92, Buy), which will once again see accelerating tonnage growth in 2Q14. Though tonnage growth will moderate in 2H14 due to steeper comps, there remains considerable potential for the company to boost yield and continue winning incremental business with new accounts.

Pixelworks Inc. (NASDAQ: PXLW) showed that its second-quarter revenue rose by 15.5% due to increased sales of chips for both projectors and TVs. Shares were up 26% at $4.50 in the Tuesday after-hours session, but we would warn that volume is not as active and a wide spread may have amped the gain. Now we have shares up a whopping 44% at $5.15, and volume has become active as a result.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

A semiconductor stock that looks poised for higher prices is Pixelworks (PXLW), which designs, develops and markets video and pixel processing semiconductors! and software for high-end digital video applications. This stock has been in play with the bulls so far in 2013, with shares up by 104%.

If you take a look at the chart for Pixelworks, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $3.63 to its intraday high of $4.74 a share. During that uptrend, shares of PXLW have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now started to push shares of PXLW into breakout territory above $4.58 a share with strong upside volume flows. Volume so far today has already surpassed 1 million shares, which is well above its three-month average action of 334,348 shares.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PXLW if it manages to break out above Thursday's intraday high of $4.74 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 334,348 shares. If we get that move soon, then PXLW will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $5.30 a share. Any high-volume move above $5.30 will then give PXLW a chance to tag $6 a share.

Traders can look to buy PXLW off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $3.92 a share, or below some more support at $3.80 a share. One can also buy PXLW off strength once it clears $4.74 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
