Banking In On The Future of Work: Four Tips You Can't Afford To Ignore

When most people think of a financial institution they usually think of suits, large offices, strict hierarchy, and a buttoned up culture. That's where ING Direct Canada is different. Employees don't have job titles, there are no offices, and the CEO doesn't even have a reserved parking spot for himself. ING Direct Canada has around 1,000 employees and 2 million customers and is bringing in 100,000 new customers every year. ING Direct Canada manages around 1,800 customers for every employee it has whereas the Big Five Banks (in Canada) are only doing around 250. They also manage around $40k in assets per employee compared to $10k per employee at the Big Five.

So how is ING Direct Canada able to manage around 25-30 times the amount of customers per employee and four times the amount of assets as their competitors? Keep in mind that ING Direct Canada only has 1,000 employees while the Big Five all have between 40,000-70,000 employees? Clearly there is something special going on here.

I recently spoke with the CEO of ING Direct Canada, Peter Aceto  and it's safe to say the Peter definitely has the 5 Must Have Qualities of the Modern Manager. He has been with the company now for 17 years and during our talk Peter had no problem talking about everything from the core values of his company to his sometimes difficult relationship with his father. ING Direct Canada is a very unique company which has a strong focus on collaboration and adapting to the future of work and so I wanted to find out what Peter was doing to create this type of a unique company. Peter's advice for other business leaders is to focus on a few key areas:

Values and the culture of the organization

According to Peter, whether you are building a company from scratch or evolving an existing one, the underlying values and culture need to facilitate collaboration. At the end of the day values can mean different things but basically they steer how you hire, make decisions, and work. The values for ING Direct Canada are: 1. To Simplify 2. To Be Challengers 3. To Be The Good Guys. Now while "collaboration" isn't an explicit value it's a core part of the culture. Collaboration comes as a necessity because the above values cannot be realized without collaboration. Not having job titles or offices is part of what ING Direct Canada does to help facilitate an open and collaborative culture. In fact, according to Peter, everyone at his company is a leader and you can't be a leader without collaborating.

Hot Life Sciences Stocks To Invest In 2015: H&Q Life Sciences Investors (HQL)

H&Q Life Sciences Investors (the Fund) is a diversified, closed-end management investment company. The Fund's investment objective is long-term capital appreciation through investment in life science companies (including biotechnology, pharmaceutical, diagnostics, managed healthcare and medical equipment, hospitals, healthcare information technology and services, devices and supplies) agriculture and environmental management. The Fund may invest in venture capital and other restricted securities if these securities would comprise 40% or less of net assets. The Fund may purchase and sell (or write) put or call options on any security in which it is permitted to invest. It may purchase and sell (write) options on stock indices (index options). H&Q Life Sciences Investors investment advisor is Hambrecht & Quist Capital Management, LLC.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Nate Pile]

This recommended fundHambrecht & Quist Life Sciences Fund (HQL)was also our top pick last year, and the fund rose 44% in 2013.

In addition to rising in value, the fund has a dividend policy of paying out 2% of its net asset value of each quarter.

  • [By Harry Domash, Publisher, DividendDetective and Winning Investing]

Harry Domash: Yeah, in fact, H&Q Life Sciences, ticker (HQL), is actually a closed-end fund, but it invests entirely in biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and if you look around the world, the investing stocks right now—besides the social media stocks—that's really the one area that has had a lot of recent growth and we expect that to continue.

I think the closed-end fund, and we'll get into that maybe a little bit later, but closed-end funds are a good way to cover it, when you're talking about a sector like that.

Johnson & Johnson is an ! interesting case, because, as you know, Johnson & Johnson is a big company that invests, and that owns a lot of different companies itself in the medical field.

You know, it owns hundreds of operating companies and it's primarily in the pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, and in consumer products, but Johnson & Johnson was a mismanaged company for a while and they were really underperforming their peers.

In fact, some of their factories were closed, their pharmaceutical production factories were forcibly closed by the government because they didn't meet standards, but they were taken over by a new CEO a few years ago, two or three years ago, and now things are improving, so Johnson & Johnson is kind of coming from down and out to being a leading company again.

They've got a lot of products, cancer-type products, and things on the pipeline and it just seems like things are going very well so we have hopes that Johnson & Johnson has reported the last two quarters are the first ones that have really been decent, they really showed growth, and then we expect that to accelerate so we're pretty hot on Johnson & Johnson now.

Steve Halpern: One particularly interesting portfolio that you maintain that I haven't seen anywhere else is based on closed-end funds that pay monthly dividends&mdash

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Amanda Alix]

2013 is starting off sweet for the hybrid REIT
Despite missing earnings per share estimates by $0.03, Two Harbors managed to keep its net interest spread at 2.9%, with no decrease from the previous quarter. The trust took a hit on book value of $0.35 -- not too disappointing considering the special Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) dividend of $1.01 Two Harbors passed around with its own $0.32 payout, about six weeks ago.

In this segment of The Motley Fool's financials-focused show, Where the Money Is, analysts Matt Koppenheffer and David Hanson discuss some of their favorite tweets of the day. Among the companies covered are Silver Bay (NYSE: SBY  ) , American Homes 4 Rent (NYSE: AMH  ) , and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) .

  • [By Sean Williams]

Silver Bay Realty Trust (NYSE: SBY  ) -- up 200%
Finally, Silver Bay Realty Trust, a renovation, leasing, and management company of single-family properties which it rents out, boosted its payout from $0.01 to $0.03 last quarter, which isn't half bad considering how recently the company was formed.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

This spring, however, signs of a slowdown began to appear. The number of distressed properties began to diminish, prices began ticking upward, and interest rates started a slow rise. However, two snippets of good news may help float the boats of private equity firm Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) , and single-family REITs Silver Bay (NYSE: SBY  ) and American Residential Properties (NYSE: ARPI  ) : easier credit, and higher foreclosure rates.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

One that recently crossed my radar as an "avoid" is small-cap bank Seacoast Banking Corp. of Florida (NASDAQ: SBCF  ) (henceforth known here as Seacoast to make our lives easier).

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Seacoast Banking Corporation of Florida (NASDAQ:SBCF) is certainly no Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) or Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC), but then again, that may be a good thing - both larger banks are still dealing with the headaches of their sheer size. The smaller bank is far more nimble, and better still, appears to be on the verge of doling out a huge reward for shareholders.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Midcaps CBRE Group Inc (NYSE: CBG) and Jones Lang LaSalle Inc (NYSE: JLL) are probably the better known real estate services stocks with the latter surging 12.36% yesterday on impressive earnings, but small cap stocks Kennedy-Wilson Holdings Inc (NYSE: KW) and FirstService Corporation (NASDAQ: FSRV) are also important real estate services providers that you may have overlooked. After all, real estate services stocks like the following would offer exposure to real estate by being invested in property as well as generating revenue from transactions, property management and other services:

  • [By Hilary Kramer]

    2. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) The REIT is another alternative vehicle that's gone mainstream in recent years. Hundreds of broad-based and specialized real estate companies and ETFs are available, and after a correction a few months ago, many are on the cheap side. Like any other alternative, this should be a seasoning for your portfolio and not the sauce itself. For most retail investors, a stake in an indexed fund like the SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSE: RWR) should be more than adequate, or look into the companies that provide services to the REIT industry like HFF (NYSE: HF) and Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL).

Plano, Texas-based Denbury represents a truly unique way to play the strength in the U.S. oil and gas markets. The company utilizes a process called carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2 EOR), or tertiary recovery, to produce oil from wells that otherwise might have seen their last days. Through the process, carbon dioxide is injected under high pressure into the otherwise spent wells, thereby facilitating production of large percentages of the remaining oil.

Top Communications Equipment Companies To Invest In Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Back in June I told you that Ciena (CIEN), which at the time was trading at $19.79 per share, was meaningfully undervalued.

It wasn't a popular call. But although carrier spending had not fully rebounded, management still figured out ways to get revenue and free-cash-flow growth.

To that end, given Ciena's industry-leading position in optical telecommunications equipment, I felt there was (at least) 15% upside to be had in the stock regardless of whether the likes of Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T) decided to spend.

Not to mention that Ciena was coming off consecutive quarters in which the company beat estimates and raised guidance. Since the June article, the stock has soared 22%, including a 52-week high of $24.61. And following yet another beat-and-raise quarter, there's no question that more gains are on the way. On many levels, the Ciena's turnaround is pretty remarkable. With the recent moves made by Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), questions were raised as to whether Ciena, which also competes with bigger rivals like Cisco (CSCO) and Juniper (JNPR), could ever survive the weak carrier-spending environment. [Read: Apple's iPhones Are Built for Collect Calls] Now, with revenue growing 14% year-over year and 19% sequentially, these concerns have been put to rest. Equally impressive, for the second consecutive quarter, Ciena showed tremendous growth in packet networking, which was up 23% year over year and a stunning 104% sequentially. Now, with virtually no one reporting on this performance, it still seems as if the Street is unwilling to give Ciena its proper credit. You can be unimpressed if you like. But let's not forget, that although Cisco did report a strong quarter several weeks ago, Cisco got hammered for issuing softer-than-expected guidance . So truth be told, although I was in the glass-half-full camp in the telecom sector, there were also reasons for caution heading into Ciena's report. Essentially, this performance, which also includes a 8% year-over-year improvement in non-GAAP gross margin, validates what I've been saying about the credibility that Ciena has earned. The fear of Cisco is always a concern, which is what has kept investors at bay.

  • [By Riddhi Kharkia] he capability to execute a solid turnaround. The results of Q1, 2015 came as a reinforcement to the belief that BlackBerry can be reincarnated with strenuous efforts after the survival struggle it has been facing for the last few years. In Q1, the company successfully managed to deliver better than expected results which led to a percentage increase of about 18 points in the share price.

Results that highlight a silver lining.

For the first quarter of 2015, Cash and investments stood at $3.1 billion which compares to a cash position of $2.7 billion in the prior year quarter. The adjusted Q1 gross margin improved to 48%, from 43% in the prior year period which can be attributed to credible cost-cutting efforts. The adjusted operating expenses decreased by 57% year over year. One good news that emerged from the earnings call was a marginal increase in the sales of BlackBerry smartphones because the company did not receive adequate response from customers after the launch of its Blackberry 10 smartphone models.

Recently, BlackBerry made a highly favourable deal with Amazon Inc (AMZN) wherein it announced that the company will license 240,000 Android applications from Amazon - in a move that may cast a positive shadow on the deteriorating internal developer relations for the stuttering BB10 software.

The company announced the deal on Wednesday, saying in a blogpost that "We've heard your appeals for access to more applications for your BlackBerry 10 device and we are delivering." The move will give users access to popular apps such as Groupon, Netflix, Pinterest, Candy Crush Saga and Minecraft, all available through a direct download, the company said.

For a smart devices company, it is of utmost importance to maintain a healthy cosystemof internal and external developers in order to create a better experience for the users via sturdy apps. However, BlackBerry falling sales and unattractive software led to the departure of

AFP/Getty Images/Gabriel Bouys Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From a luxury electric car maker ramping up its production to sandwich makers failing to make dough rise, here's a rundown of the week's smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Tesla Motors (TSLA) -- Winner The Model S isn't cheap, but Tesla is selling enough of them to impress investors. Shares of the maker of plug-in electric vehicles raced to a new high after announcing that it delivered 6,892 cars in its latest quarter. Things will get even better in 2014 as Tesla expects to sell and deliver 35,000 vehicles. Tesla will need to ramp up its production -- currently, roughly 600 cars a week -- to closer to 1,000 Model S and new Model X cars by the end of the year. Conn's (CONN) -- Loser It isn't easy running a consumer electronics store these days. Shares of Conn's plunged 43 percent on Thursday after warning that its holiday quarter results will fall well short of its earlier expectations. If that seems like a significant drop for a mere miss, let's dive a little deeper. Conn's also warned that it's suffering from higher loan delinquencies than usual. Conn's provides in-house consumer credit on its appliances, furniture, mattresses, and consumer electronics, so revealing that 8.8 percent of its loan portfolio hasn't made a payment in more than 60 days is problematic. Conn's, which has stores in the Southwest, blames cold weather for disrupting payments, but things are never as simple as that. Conn's was holding up better than its peers that had imploded earlier this year on reports that the holidays weren't so jolly this time around. Now we know that Conn's is merely mortal, and that way too many of its customers last year aren't current on their payments. LifeLock Inc. (NYSE: LOCK) has only been public for about 15 months. It is a high beta stock, trading at 55-times expected trailing earnings and almost 48-times expected 2014 earnings. The driving force here is that identity theft and organized global fraud against consumers is forcing everyone to buy identity protection services. Target was the worst recent news on this front, but there are literally dozens of other companies who have had data breaches on their millions of customers. LifeLock shares hit a new high of $20.83 on Friday and closed up 1.6% at $20.41 on the day. This one is up about 150% from its IPO in late 2012.

To the layperson, the 802.11ac standard means absolutely nothing, even if that individual is using that particular technology. As such, there's no apparent difference between the networking technology offered by the likes of Ubiquiti Networks (NASDAQ:UBNT), Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARUN), and most other networking companies. To industry insiders who understand why 802.11ac is an important step-up in the world of wireless networking though, they're apt to have also noticed ARUN has more effectively taken advantage of this technology paradigm shift than peers like UBNT and slower-moving CSCO have. Investors would be wise to take notice too.
