5 Best Healthcare Technology Stocks To Own Right Now

Raising the minimum wage has become a hot-button issue in the U.S. recently, with President Obama having called for a raise in the federal minimum wage in his 2013 State of the Union address. Many U.S. states have followed suit with proposals of their own to raise their minimum wages, with nearly 20 states already having set wage levels above the $7.25 federal minimum.

When you look around the world, the U.S. ranks among the top countries for its minimum wage. But you can find several countries that pay workers a lot more. Let's look at five of the highest-paying countries for minimum-wage workers, with wages given in U.S. dollar terms using current currency-exchange rates.

New Zealand, $11.13 an hour
New Zealand workers are entitled to minimum wages of 13.75 New Zealand dollars an hour. The most recent rise came earlier this year, with a boost of NZ$0.25 coming in February. However, along with that rise came a controversial new "Starting Out" wage program for younger workers, under which those aged 16 to 19 can receive as little as 80% of the adult minimum. Proponents argue that with youth unemployment soaring over 30% in New Zealand, the measure will encourage greater job creation for young workers. Opponents, however, argue that the wage is discriminatory and that similar measures in the past to promote job growth have failed.

Best Blue Chip Companies To Own For 2014

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over daily movements, we do like to keep an eye on market changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

Stocks fell for the third straight day today, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) had its worst session in nearly a month as concerns mounted about the Federal Reserve stimulus taper and a disappointing holiday season. The blue chips fell 94 points, or 0.6%, ending the day at 15,915.

With the Fed set to hold its next Open Market Committee meeting in two weeks to determine the future of its $85 billion bond-buying program, investors once again became nervous about the coming taper. Recent jobs numbers have been strong, and Friday's November jobs report should go a long way to determining monetary policy. Another month of strong employment growth could mean the Fed begins cutting the stimulus sooner than expected. Stocks have gained more than 25% this year in large part because of the Fed's bond-buying program, which have made bond yields artificially low, making stocks look better by comparison. Tomorrow's jobs report from ADP will be the first hint at how many new jobs were created in November.

Top 10 Casino Companies To Watch For 2015: McDonald's Corporation(MCD)

Unlike J. Crew and Tory Burch, the reason I want in on Five Guys is for the beautiful simplicity of the business. Murrell now oversees a business that should generate over $1 billion in revenue in 2013. While the company is still far short of McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) $6.6 billion, Five Guys seems to be managing a feat that McDonald's has failed at over the last few quarters: growth.

  • [By David Smith]

    For comparison's sake
Compare those tax payments and percentages with those of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , which, from a market capitalization perspective, is larger than ExxonMobil. The California technology superstar paid income taxes of about $4 billion in 2011, an effective rate of just 24.6%. And McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) , which checked in at 25th place on the list of "elite" taxpayers, forked over $2.1 billion in taxes. Its effective rate: 31.3%.

  • [By Jeremy Bowman]

Four Dow components reported earnings today, includingMcDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) , which fell 0.4% after a lackluster quarter. The Golden Arches' domestic problems continued as same-store sales fell 1.7% in the U.S, though they were up globally by 0.5%. Total revenue improved 1%, or 3% when adjusting for currency fluctuations, to $6.7 billion, short of estimates at $6.73 billion, while EPS of $1.21 missed expectations of $1.24 per-share profit, though the figure would have been $1.24 after adjusting for currency changes. While the results weren't terrible, the quarter painted a portrait of a company struggling to maintain its fast-food leadership.

The qualifications for being a purple chip are basically a screen for stability and performance: smooth earnings profiles, including seven years of consecutive EPS growth, and market caps north of $1 billion. Not surprisingly, you’ll find Procter & Gamble (PG), McDonald’s (MCD) and IBM (IBM) on Macke’s list of what I’d call the “usual suspects.”

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt Thalman]

A few stocks are being hurt by lower commodity prices. Both of the major oil and gas components of the Dow are also falling today. Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) is down 2.4%, while ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) has lost 2.2%. The price of a barrel of light crude oil has fallen 3.6% today, and unleaded gasoline per gallon is down 1.67%. The feared slowdown in China is likely the reason the price of oil is dropping. However, as we have seen in the past, the price of oil falls only briefly before moving higher again. Investors in Chevron or Exxon should ride out this temporary downturn and wait for higher prices at the pump.

Advisors' Opinion:

It's certainly been a hectic day for BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY  ) . The rumor mill is running at full speed, BlackBerry's share price took a hit at the open after an analyst predicted poor smartphone sales results, and there's even talk that BlackBerry will sell all or part of itself -- again. As if BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins doesn't have enough on his plate, much of which he brought on himself by saying things like Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) iPhone is out of date and that tablets will become obsolete in five years, among other head-scratchers. Heins' comments aside, the shame is that the nearly 15% stock appreciation BlackBerry shareholders have enjoyed the past month or so just came to a screeching halt.

It operates primarily in the European Union, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Canada, and Latin America. The company is based in New York, New York.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Aaron Smith]

The stock price for Reynolds American (RAI), parent company of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., fell about 3%. Other Big Tobacco stocks followed suit, with shares of Altria Group (MO) slipping about 2%. Philip Morris (PM) falling about 1% and Lorillard (LO) dropping nearly 3%.

  • [By Dan Dzombak]

However, the tobacco industry has been a great hunting ground for investors. While no tobacco companies pay as high a dividend as Vector Group, long-term investors would do well to look at Altria in the U.S. or Phillip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) . Both were part of the original Phillip Morris conglomerate that split up around 2008 by spinning off Kraft and Phillip Morris International. Both businesses are leaders in their respective markets -- Altria in the U.S. and Phillip Morris the world, excluding China and the U.S -- and have exceptionally high-returning businesses. This is in part due to both having one of the top brands in the world with Marlboro. For dividend investors, the key part is that both have long-term histories of steadily increasing their dividends. If I had to choose just one, while Altria has a higher yield than Phillip Morris (4.9% vs. 3.9%), I would go with Phillip Morris. The company has better growth prospects and a lower payout ratio, and the business is far more diversified in terms of legal risk, whereas Altria could be hurt by any laws or rulings that go against tobacco companies in the U.S.

  • [By Lawrence Meyers]

That means you should go with either Altria Group (MO) or Philip Morris International (PM). And if you’re only interested in buying one, I think I select MO stock. It pays a slightly better divided (5.2% vs. 4.7%).

Best Dividend Companies To Own For 2014

Everything was looking great with my new investment.

The stock had been steadily climbing higher since my purchase in early January. This company was among the original members of the S&P 500 and once ranked among the Dividend Aristocrats. Members of this exclusive list have raised their dividends annually for 25 consecutive years. Talk about a vote of confidence!

However, the company was dropped from that list recently. Not because of an issue with its dividends -- but because it no longer had the minimum $3 billion market capitalization to remain a member.

In addition, sales had been slipping over the past several years. Counterbalancing the bad news, the company was still creating decent cash flow, producing solid returns on invested capital and trading at relatively low price.

It's clear that this isn't just a problem with the grocery stores themselves. Dean Foods (NYSE: DF  ) , essentially the Pinnacle Foods of milk products, had flat sales growth from 2007 to 2011, just like conventional grocers. White Wave Foods, Dean's former organic milk subsidiary and recent spinoff, had impressive 64%growth during that time.

  • [By Johanna Bennett]

Dean Foods (DF) reported a bigger-than-expected loss and yanked its full-year guidance. The company said it is facing “by far the most difficult operating environment in the history of the company” as prices for milk rises and U.S. consumer buy less of the beverage. The stock fell 3.9%.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

The milk producers are pushing the health aspects of their argument in that kids drinking more milk would be healthier. As the largest dairy producer, Dean Foods (NYSE: DF  ) , notes, while about half the sugar in flavored milk is from naturally occurring lactose, all the sugar in soda is added sugar. Of course soda is facing falling consumption levels, too, these days.

It is able to better navigate dynamic technological environments to uniquely position itself in the industry.

    Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU  ) -- $1.84
Despite its tiny share price, Alcatel-Lucent did close at a 52-week high on Friday.

The global provider of products and services for the networking and communications industries may be losing money on flat revenue growth, but losses are narrowing. There's also more to the flat top-line performance than meets the eye as reasonable growth in its networks and platforms businesses is offsetting double-digit declines in its optical networking operations. Alcatel-Lucent is also taking better bets, exiting or restructuring contracts where the cost structures aren't fiscally prudent.

NSN is a joint venture with Siemens (SI) in the field of telecoms infrastructure. Its chief competitors are the likes of Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), Ericsson (ERIC) and yes, Huawei. As the latter is a rather opaquely-owned Chinese company, we cannot use it to help create a valuation for NSN. However, I believe using the first two companies mentioned is sufficient to give us a decent indication of NSN's true value.

According to unnamed sources cited by Reuters, Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE each received about 25% of the contracts in the first tender offer. Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), Alcatel-Lucent S.A. (NYSE: ALU) and Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK)Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) scored about 10% each of the contracts on offer. The total value of the contracts awarded is reported to be about $3.2 billion.

Another technology stock that insiders are active in here is Ubiquiti Networks (UBNT), which develops high-performance networking technology for service providers and enterprises. Insiders are buying this stock into big time strength, since shares are up a whopping 211% so far in 2013.

Ubiquiti Networks has a market cap of $3.3 billion and an enterprise value of $3.4 billion. This stock trades at a fair valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 31.65 and a forward price-to-earnings of 18.48. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 100%, and for next year it's pegged at 13.2%. This is a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $279.73 million and its total debt is $74.89 million.

A director just bought 20,000 shares, or about $737,000 worth of stock, at $36.85 per share.

From a technical perspective, UBNT is currently trending above its 200-day moving average and just below its 50-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has been trending sideways for the last month and change, with shares moving between $36.30 on the downside and $44.80 on the upside. Traders should keep an eye on shares of UBNT for any high-volume move above the upper-end of its recent range, since that could trigger a big breakout for this stock.

If you're in the bull camp on UBNT, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above some near-term support at $36.30 and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $39.35 to $40.59 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 905,311 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then UBNT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its all-time high at $44.80 a share. Any high-volume move above $44.80 will then give UBNT a chance to tag $50 to $55 a share.
