General Motors or Ford? Credit Suisse Doesn’t Particularly Like Either

When it comes to Ford Motor (F) and General Motors (GM), investors have stated a clear preference for the former over the latter. So do the folks at Credit Suisse, although it’s fair to say they don’t really like either of the major automakers.

Getty Images

Credit Suisse analysts Dan Galves and Shreyas Patil explain:

For General Motors and Ford, we don't expect much earnings growth, short of what is already relatively assured (non-recur of restructuring / recalls, return to profit in Europe). The biggest gap to the Street is likely in NA, where we believe trend mid-cycle earnings levels could be well-below 2014. We believe that US trend demand is lower than the market thinks, even a modest rise in rates could have a meaningfully negative impact on US pricing, and regulatory costs to meet fuel economy targets are accelerating…

If we were bullish on OEM's, Ford would be high on the list. In the next 1-2 years, Ford will approach 100% of volume off 9 high-volume, versatile platforms and their vision years ago to shrink vehicle size and go full -bore into downsized, turbocharged engines is exactly what consumers are demanding today. But our cautious view on US demand/pricing, and our belief that NA EBIT will not snap back as quickly as the market thinks drives our Neutral rating on Ford…

[In regards to General Motors, it's] always something. With General Motors on the cusp of meaningful European improvement, it now appears that NA margins are peaking much earlier than expected, with headwinds ahead. And soon after General Motors instituted a meaningful dividend in January, a series of recalls put $2.5 bln out the door, lowering the likelihood of a meaningful buyback in the near future.

Shares of General Motors have dropped 1.2% to $33.55 at 11:39 a.m., while Ford Motor has fallen 0.7% to $17.30.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Overall, the most popular emerging market ETFs experienced much sharper declines than the less-than-1% drop the Dow posted this week. Vanguard Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: VWO  ) and iShares Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: EEM  ) were both down just under 3% for the week. But when you drill down to look for particular culprits in the emerging markets, you don't have to look very far to find that it was generally a broad-based decline:

In China, more concerns about a slowdown in the manufacturing industry put pressure on stocks. The Shanghai index didn't move much, but one key ETF tracking the Chinese market sank nearly 4% in response to the news, largely on weakness in telecom giant China Mobile (NYSE: CHL  ) , which plays a commanding role in many emerging market-focused ETFs.
Indian stocks suffered from some of the same macroeconomic issues, with the Bombay market's index down about 3% and ETF tracking the market falling 4% to 5%. The Indian finance minister responded to the decline, which many blamed on Fed Chair Ben Bernanke's comments, by saying, "We think that Bernanke's statement has been misunderstood or misinterpreted." Yet that didn't seem to appease investors in outward-directed industries like Infosys (NYSE: INFY  ) , whose IT offerings require health activity levels not just in India but in the U.S. and other customer-heavy countries as well.
Stocks in Mexico suffered declines of almost 5%, retracing some ground after an extraordinarily strong stretch of gains on optimism about the country's ability to reinvigorate its economy beyond its core reliance on petroleum and to resolve ongoing conflicts with drug cartels.

But there were some relatively bright spots in other emerging markets. Brazilian stocks were actually up a bit on the week, as the nation found itself better insulated from all the happenings in Asia related to China and Japan. Russian stocks also remained relatively stable,

Infosys (NYSE: INFY  ) will release its quarterly earnings report next Monday, but investors are already skittish about how well the IT services company will be able to perform. In a sluggish environment for global economic growth generally and for IT spending in particular, the entire outsourcing and consulting industry has felt the pressure, and as a primary beneficiary of more positive trends in the industry over the years, Infosys is potentially vulnerable to a reversal in those trends.

Tesla's good fortune mirrors that of Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM  ) in 2008, when the Indian automaker bought Ford's (NYSE: F  ) floundering Jaguar Land Rover company for a paltry $2.3 billion. And just like Tata, Tesla is hoping to maximize sales in the luxury vehicle department. In April alone, Jaguar sales clocked in at 4,710 units while Land Rover roared ahead with 23,790 units sold. Sales are up 12.2% year over year, and the company enjoyed more than 30% growth in the UK and Asia Pacific.

The rise of VW could hit GM particularly hard, both in terms of reputation and in earnings. GM said it was looking to introduce four new Chevrolet models in China next year, as well as to expand its low-cost Baojun brand. Chinese buyers could already be looking elsewhere though, given the rise of VW and of Tata Motors Ltd. (NYSE: TTM), which sells cars under the Jaguar and Range Rover brands. Sales of Tata vehicles have risen sharply in the past year, and the company is set to begin producing cars in China.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Among holdings in which Viking Global increased its stake was Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG  ) , a specialist in robotic surgical equipment. The company has had a bumpy year, thanks to bearish comments from a research firm and questions about the efficacy of its systems. Some legal worries were eased recently, with a victory in court. While some wonder whether the company's growth prospects are slowing down, others love Intuitive's competitive advantages and dominance in its promising market. It has been posting double-digit revenue and earnings growth rates for quite a while and has a forward P/E ratio near 23, which is not exactly nosebleed territory.

One possible way to reduce the potential for developing a blood clot is to reduce the incision size or invasiveness of a surgical procedural. Hot Growth Stocks To Watch For 2014: CNO Financial Group Inc. (CNO)

The company was formerly known as Conseco, Inc. and changed its name to CNO Financial Group, Inc. in May 2010. CNO Financial Group, Inc. was founded in 1979 and is headquartered in Carmel, Indiana.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Vanin Aegea]

I have heard many people comment about the insurance policies for cars, houses, life, assets, etc. The arguments always revolve around the same issue: Is it really necessary? What are the chances to be hit by a Hurricane, or to meet a sudden death? Well, nobody really knows. Some individuals however, sleep better when they know a policy backs their life investments. Here, I will look into three insurance companies that concentrate on different policies, or geographies. These are: China Life (LFC), and Conseco (CNO).

  • [By Dimitra DeFotis]

Many other insurers are trading lower today, chief among them Aflac (AFL), down 3.65%. CNO Financial (CNO) fell 1%. The best performer: life insurance giant Prudential (PRU), whose shares rose more than 1%.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Up first is CNO Financial Group (CNO), a mid-cap financial stock that's rocketed close to 60% higher since the calendar flipped over to January. Yup, it's been a great year for the market, but it's been a far better one for investors who own CNO. But that strong performance isn't showing any signs of slowing yet. In fact, CNO looks primed for even more upside in the fourth quarter.

That's because CNO is currently forming a bullish pattern called an ascending triangle. The ascending triangle pattern is formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares -- in this case at $14.75 -- and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as CNO bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $14.75 resistance level. When that breakout happens, it's time to become a buyer.

ACCO's price action isn't exactly textbook. After all, the pattern is coming in at the bottom of a downtrend, not after an uptrend. But ultimately, that doesn't change the trading implications of a move through that $7.50 level.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $7.50 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant. The move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Don't be early on this trade.

Bloomberg has the details on Crocs:

Crocs Inc. rose as much as 14 percent in early trading after saying Chief Executive Officer John McCarvel will retire andBlackstone Group LP will invest $200 million in the maker of colorful plastic clogs…

The shoemaker said in a statement yesterday that it will use the funds from Blackstone investment in convertible preferred stock to increase share repurchases to $350 million. McCarvel will step down on or about April 30…

The retirement of John McCarvel from his CEO post and from the board of Directors removes a large road block to success. Blackstone involvement (13% ownership upon conversion) may serve as a catalyst for positive change, including closing underperforming stores and limiting future store openings. While increased share repurchases should help EPS growth, fixing the fundamentals of the business will require more extensive efforts.

Wedbush’s Corinna Freedman explains how Blackstone’s involvement helps Crocs find a McCarvel’s replacement:

We expect the shares to react positively to the announcement as we believe that a regime change and a shift of balance of power in the Board (with Blackstone having 2 board seats with veto power and presumably, a significant say regar

5 Best Railroad Stocks For 2014

There’s been a lot of talk that investors are ready to shed their pessimistic views on airline stocks like Alaska Air (ALK) Delta Air Lines (DAL), United Continental Holdings (UAL) and American Airlines (AAL) and embrace them for the long term. The only problem: There’s no sign that they actually are.

Getty Images

Mutual funds own only 32% of ownership of US airline stocks like American Airlines, United Continental, Delta Air Lines and Alaska Air, just two percentage points more than in 2009, according toWolfe Research’s Hunter Keay. Hedge funds, meanwhile, own just 16%, three percentage points higher than in 2009. That suggests that the “smart money” investors hasn’t been quick to embrace he “new” airlines, Keay says. He explains:

Although it may seem like it becoming more popular to invest in airlines, data would show that it not. Optimism appears confined to a small group. Multiples are still compressed and the prior stats indicate that there still isn a lot of long-term capital invested in the space. We also haven seen many major haleinvestors like Warren Buffett put money to work. But Mr. Buffett was once skeptical of railroads, too, prior to his purchase of BNSF. Imagine what it would mean if he or another similar investor bought an airline?

In 2012, the Company began using Your World Kitchen to describe the breadth of its offering and its customers' dining experience.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is quick-service restaurant player Noodles (NDLS), which is set to release numbers on Wednesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Noodles to report revenue of $91.01 million on earnings of 11 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Noodles is very high at 18.3%. That means that out of the 18.33 million shares in the tradable float, 3.01 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 11.4%, or by about 307,000 shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of NDLS could experience a large short squeeze post-earnings as the bears rush to cover some of their bets.

From a technical perspective, NDLS is currently trending right below its 50-day moving average, which is bearish. This stock has been trending sideways for the last four months, with shares moving between $38.90 on the downside and $51.97 on the upside. If this stock can manage to take out the upper-end of its recent range post-earnings, then we could see a big breakout trade get triggered that would take NDLS outside of its massive range.

If you're bullish on NDLS, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $47.50 to $49.75 a share, and then once it takes out its all-time high at $51.97 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 455,155 shares. If that breakout hits, then NDLS will set up to enter new all-time high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $60 to $70 a share.

I would avoid NDLS or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops bac

Rogelio V. Solis/APMississippi Attorney General Jim Hood, speaking to a business group in Jackson, Miss., in October 2012. WASHINGTON -- Mississippi has sued credit reporting giant Experian (EXPR), alleging sweeping errors in the company's data and routine violations of consumer protection laws. Mississippi's action -- and a previously unreported multistate investigation of credit bureaus led by Ohio -- represent a significant new legal challenge to the industry. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood's complaint against Experian Information Solutions was filed without fanfare last month in a Biloxi state courthouse and transferred to Mississippi federal court late last week. The lawsuit accuses Experian of knowingly including error-riddled data in the credit files of millions of Americans, jeopardizing their ability to obtain loans, employment-related background checks and sensitive government security clearances. Experian has even wrongly reported that consumers are on a federal terrorism watch list, the lawsuit said. Both Experian and a spokesman for its trade group, the Consumer Data Industry Association, declined to discuss the litigation or related questions about the quality of the company's data. Experian warned investors earlier this year that the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and its British counterpart were regulatory agencies responsible for protecting consumers and said, "It remains uncertain how these bodies may affect our credit and consumer business processes and business models in the future." Experian told investors that, to the best of its knowledge, it complies with data protection requirements, but it warned that, "We might fail to comply with international, federal, regional, provincial, state or other jurisdictional regulations, due to their complexity, frequent changes or inconsistent application and interpretation." Despite the errors, the Mississippi lawsuit said, Experian provides no straightforward way for consumers

One potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is in-vitro diagnostic player TearLab (TEAR), which is set to release numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect TearLab to report revenue of $3.51 million on a loss of 13 cents per share.

This company has managed to top Wall Street estimates two times over the last four quarters, which is a bullish earnings trend. If TearLab can delve another beat, then shares could be setting up for a large move higher.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for TearLab is extremely high at 37.1%. That means that out of the 25.54 million shares in the tradable float, 8.59 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a huge short interest on a stock with a very low tradable float. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of TEAR could easily explode higher post-earnings as the bears jump to cover some of their bets.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] en are Wal-Mart, Target, the dollar stores, etc.

And the end user (consumer) is really the female head of the household. This is complicated somewhat in almost all situations by the possibility as we have with Hanes where the user is not always the purchaser. Plenty of underwear purchases are not made by the person who will use the product. But they are obviously an influencer of the purchase decision.

The strongest example of this is kids' toys. Kids do not buy toys. Parents buy toys. But kids influence the parents.

For many companies, sales are first made to distributors, then go from distributors to retailers, then from retailers to households. And even within the household the buyer may not be the user.

It is helpful to make these distinctions. And not to be overly technical about the way accounting defines customers, etc.

For example, a key group to consider with Western Union is agents. The way Western Union's statements are prepared, however, treat agents simply as an expense line with their revenue belonging to Western Union. The reality is more complicated. Western Union's financial statements appear to have a ton of variable costs in them. But this is really all just agent expense. The business is in reality a very fixed-cost business. Once an agent is in place an additional customer of that agent adds to the bottom line of both the agent and Western Union to a very great extent relative to the fees that customer pays. In other words, marginal revenue turns into marginal profit very easily.

When considering investing in a company like Western Union, you have to think about both agents and customers. It would be wrong to focus only on customers. The agents are a key part of the business. In many ways, they are the best chance of having a competitive advantage. So it is Western Union's job to attract both agents and customers.

That is the kind of thing Warren Buffett would intuitively understand and focus

    Costly market share gains
The problem is that Family Dollar has had to pay up for its increasing market share and sales levels. The company's gross profit margin fell by more than a full percentage point, to 34.7% last quarter. In contrast, Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) booked an expansion of profits, to 35.2%, continuing a trend that's seen it pull away from Family Dollar.

  • [By Traders Reserve]

I do believe as Wal-Mart gets hurt, the dollar stores will do a little better especially Dollar General (DG), but dont overlook Dollar Tree (DLTR). Wall Street is worried about Costco (COST) but I believe it will actually outperform expectations. Costco seems to have figured out how to grow much faster than Wal-Mart and still provide affordable health insurance for most employees.

It also produces copper and holds interests in oil and gas properties located in Canada. The company was founded in 1983 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:

The strategy, as described by McCanless, sounds a lot like that being pursued by gold miners. Remember, just a few months ago companies like Barrick Gold (ABX) were pledging to stop focusing solely on production and instead look at all-in costs and cash flow.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The biggest challenge for NovaGold has been convincing its development partners to take action on its primary mining properties. The Donlin Gold project in Alaska is one of the largest known undeveloped gold deposits in the world, according to the company, but joint-venture partner Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) said last year that the economics of the mine didn't justify further action on its part, and as the deep pocket in the venture, Barrick is in a far better position to invest capital on Donlin than NovaGold. Similarly, high production costs at NovaGold's Galore Creek joint venture with Teck Resources (NYSE: TCK  ) has led NovaGold to consider a sale of its 50% interest in the venture in order to raise capital and focus on Donlin.

Finally, and along those same lines, E*TRADE Financial (NASDAQ: ETFC  ) jumped 4% both on the comfort that the Fed will continue to buoy the still-fragile markets with QE3 and on the announcement that CEO Paul Izdik will be speaking at the Sandler O'Neil Global Exchange & Brokerage Conference next week. Just as with State Street, these conferences give analysts a good idea about the health of a financial firm and are often followed by upgrades and/or downgrades. For E*TRADE, a lot more is on the line since it's still in the process of recovering from a mortgage loan portfolio rife with toxic and delinquent loans. As long as the Fed keeps lending rate targets near record lows (as it pledged today), it'll allow E*TRADE ample time to recover.
