MannKind and Lime Energy: Two Almost-Great Trades (MNKD, LIME)

The trick to profitable trading (though few great traders would ever admit it) is being in the right place at the right time. To do that, however, requires a great deal of patience waiting on the market's best "would be" trades to begin that potential moves. Enter MannKind Corporation (NASDAQ:MNKD) and Lime Energy Co. (NASDAQ:LIME)... two of the market's almost-great ideas right now. Though neither is off and running, both LIME and MNKD are on the verge and worth putting on your watchlist. Here's what we need to see for both to become worth taking a swing on.

As a refresher, MannKind Corporation is the developer of the inhaled insulin product called AFREZZA. It's been a long and dramatic journey for AFREZZA, and MNKD shareholders. But, there's a light at t he end of the tunnel now, and that's helping the stock. Granted, it's helping the stock erratically, but there's enough of an occasional bullish undertow to make it worth keeping tabs on.

Yes, MNKD has had a miserable past few months, falling from a high of $8.06 in June to a low of $4.20 this month. But, since that low we've seen a strong, V-shaped reversal effort take shape, which says the tide's turned... almost. Already ripe for a reversal, if MannKind Corporation shares can just fight their way above the 50-day moving average line (purple) at $5.42, that should seal the deal and clinch the budding bullishness.

The budding Lime Energy rebound is similarly-shaped, with the bottom of the V forming in October, and followed by decided uptrend. What's even more convincing about the LIME rebound that we're not seeing with MannKind is a ton of volume on the way up....volume levels we sure didn't see on the way down. This tells us the uptrend has - and is gathering - lots of participants, which are needed to keep the rally going.

The clincher for the LIME rally that will turn it into a full-blown and trade-worthy uptrend is a move (and ideally, a close) above $3.85, which has been support as well as resistance of late. Lime Energy Co. shares are already above the 50-day moving average line, and just a tad more progress could really unlock the potential upside the market would be willing to provide for the stock.

Note that these bullish outlooks for Lime Energy Co. and MannKind Corporation have nothing to do with their fundamentals, and neither are long-term calls.

Top 5 Cheapest Companies To Own For 2014: Pan American Silver Corp.(PAAS)

Pan American Silver Corp. engages in the exploration, development, extraction, processing, production, refining, reclamation, and operation of silver properties. The company also produces and sells gold, zinc, lead, and copper. As of April 27, 2011, it had seven silver mining operations in Mexico, Peru, Argentina, and Bolivia. The company was founded in 1979 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Doug Ehrman]

In terms of individual companies, there are several good choices, but these can behave very differently. Pan American Silver (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) , for example, missed revenue expectations and beat earnings expectations in its last earnings release. But despite the beat, EPS shrank considerably from a year earlier on a GAAP basis. The stock has been fairly flat ever since. Conversely, First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) reported strong revenue growth and a small bump in profits, sending the stock higher since the announcement. First Majestic reported increased cash costs and tightening margins, largely driven by lower silver prices. Each of these companies faces pressure from increasing production costs and environmental concerns.

  • [By The Investment Doctor]

As the mineralized zone seems to be open to the north and the south, I personally expect this project to reach the threshold of 10 billion pounds of copper in the next resource update. The only negative thing is the fact the Josemaria project is located in Argentina, which isn't really a mining-friendly country. It will be an interesting case to see how NGEX and Pan Pacific Copper will be able to move this project forward after Pan American Silver (PAAS) ran into problems with its La Navidad Silver project last year. Fortunately for NGEX Resources, it's not the federal government but the local states who have the prerogative about mining permits and licenses, and the San Juan province is one of the most mining-friendly provinces.

  • [By MONEYMORNING]

A great example was when Minefinders was taken over by Pan American Silver Corp. (Nasdaq: PAAS) in 2012. We earned 56.54% on the sale of a first tranche (before the takeover offer), then 42.12% on the balance of the position once PAAS announced the takeover.

  • [By Tim Melvin]

Once again, rather than making a wish on burning match bets, I prefer to buy out of favor companies at a steep discount to their asset and business value. And alook at the silver miners shows deep discounts to the value of corporate assets that could lead to significant profits.

Pan American Silver (PAAS) trades at just 65% of book value and has fallen by about 75% over the past few years. Couer Mines (CDE) is fetching just 54% of book and has fallen by around 80% since 2006. Silver Standard Resources (SSRI) trades at 55% of book and for less than the value of the cash the company has in the bank.

In reality, silver just needs to stop falling in price for these stocks to start to recover. If the analysts are right and silver hits a new high in the next decade, these could easily be the best investments you ever make in your lifetime.

Top Machinery Stocks To Own Right Now

On Jun 11, we reiterated our Neutral recommendation on Joy Global Inc. (JOY), the manufacturer of mining equipment used in various types of mining. Joy Global currently has a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell).

Why the Reiteration?

Joy Global fiscal second quarter earnings exceeded our expectation but lagged year over year. The year-over-year decline was primarily due to lower contribution from Underground Mining Machinery (down 23.1%). The softness in demand from U.S. markets and lower shipments in China and Eurasia led to the decline in the segment.

Despite the earnings beat, we remain cautious about the decline in backlog as well as order booking. Since the commodities mined are presently in supply surplus, the miners are taking a cautious approach towards developing and expanding their mining projects. Unless demand recovers to cover up the excess capacity the mining equipment makers will find it difficult to accelerate profits.

A report from World Steel Association projects a nearly 3% increase in global steel demand in 2013 and 2014. The revival of demand in the steel market could act as a positive catalyst for the company. In the U.S. the demand for thermal coal is expected to rise due to a recovery in natural gas prices. This could act as another catalyst for the mining equipment company.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Mike the PhD]

Historically the stock prices of Deere (DE) and other agricultural equipment firms and retailers like Case-New Holland (CNH), Titan Machinery (TITN), AGCO (AGCO), Tractor Supply (TSCO), Valmont (VAL), and Lindsay (LNN) have tended to closely track the price of corn. When corn prices go up, farmers tend to make more money, and they spend that money on new equipment from Deere and other firms. This relationship is especially strong for Deere and Corn, but it holds true for all of the stocks above to some extent. (Correlation coefficients between all of the stock prices above and corn are statistically significant to at least the 5% level, see my blog here for more details.)

Kubota isn't the only company aggressively challenging Deere. AGCO (NYSE: AGCO  ) has made aggressive expansion efforts in Africa, working with specialty agricultural lender Rabobank to try to help farmers on the continent buy more farming equipment. Moreover, both AGCO and CNH Global (NYSE: CNH  ) have made emerging markets like Latin America a high priority, reaping benefits from the more rapidly expanding economies among Latin American nations. Deere has targeted Latin America as well, but it hasn't been as aggressive with its international efforts as its peers. Deere's stock price has reflected its lack of initiative in expanding globally:

Advisors' Opinion:

On that theory, hard-hit energy stocks that have suffered from the crash in oil prices could stand to benefit. Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR  ) , for instance, lost more than half its value in the last four months of 2014 as the exploration and production company with a huge stake in the Bakken shale play in North Dakota suffered from worries about the sustainability of its long-term growth in light of falling oil. Similarly, many small-cap gold and silver miners struggled through a poor 2014, and so companies like First Majestic Silver (NYSE: AG  ) and IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG  ) arguably have more to gain from a January bounce.

Three short ETFs are designed to profit from China economic downward slide. The ProShares Short FTSE China 25 (YXI), an unleveraged ETF, holds shares in iShares FTSE China Large-Cap (FXI) swaps. Investors looking to magnify their returns can choose from two leveraged short ETFs: ProShares Ultra Short FTSE China 25 (FXP) and Direxion Daily China Bear 3x Shares (YANG). Both ProShares Ultra Short and Direxion Daily hold shares that increase in value three times faster than an unleveraged ETF. As outlined in this article, the company underperformance in its core brands, Red Lobster and Olive Garden resulted in lower sales in the last quarter. Darden was not the only one facing trouble, other restaurants such as Dine Equity (DIN) and Yum! Brands (YUM) have also fallen short. On the other hand, we see we think Darden can continue to get benefitted from the acquisitions.

My biggest worry about Chipotle stock right now is that its valuation is too hot to handle. This is a stock that is trading at more than 34 times forward earnings; compare that to restaurant rivals like McDonalds (MCD) at 15.5 and Taco Bell and KFC parent Yum Brands (YUM) at 18.5. Even fast-casual peer Panera has a comparably cheap forward P/E of 20.4.

  • [By Mark Yagalla]

Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM  ) looks poised to increase sales at all three of its brands: KFC is bringing back the Double Down, Taco Bell has a new breakfast menu, and Pizza Hut has WingStreet. Yum! Brands is certainly not afraid to try new ideas, which illustrates management's ability to overcome adversity, especially after the challenges the company faced in China over the last few quarters.

It's interesting to see which excuses the Street willingly accepts when a company is struggling with guidance. In the case of Autodesk (Nasdaq:ADSK), the Street isn't too bothered by another round of lower guidance and ongoing economic uncertainties. Instead, investors seem excited about the potential of a more pronounced transition to a SaaS model. Although I think the Street may be a little too optimistic on that point, the shares do look a little undervalued and remain a volatile software play leveraged to improving economic activity.

Fiscal Second Quarter Basically On Target
It sounds like there's still quite a bit of noise and uncertainty in Autodesk's core CAD/CAM end markets, but the company still delivered an in-line quarter.

Revenue fell 1% from last year, and a little more than that on a sequential basis, as an 8% drop in license revenue was offset up a 9% increase in maintenance revenue. Both Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) and Manufacturing were up annually and sequentially, while Platform/Emerging declined over both periods.

Now that we've gotten through five months of 2013, it's a good time to review which stocks have performed well for the year, which haven't, and whether you should own any of them. With the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) having increased by 15.35% year to date, there have clearly been more big winners than big losers this year. With Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) being the biggest Dow loser and down only 4.25% in 2013, and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) being the biggest winner, up 71.37% in 2013, the difference is dramatic. A few of the compelling companies
From my perspective, the message to be taken away from Stuart's presentation is simply that, even in the face of potential U.S. economic distress, a well-structured portfolio will contain at least a modicum of energy of names. For starters I'd look to Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , the world's leading oilfield services company and energy's technology major domo. Given its operations in about 85 countries, a worldwide energy cataclysm would seemingly be required for the big company to face a significant slowdown.

Consumers and cooks have an expectation that mayonnaise should both taste and perform like mayonnaise.

"Consumers and cooks have an expectation that mayonnaise should both taste and perform like mayonnaise. Just Mayo does neither," the complaint states, noting that the Hampton Creek product's oils separate when heated. Unilever holds the biggest share of the U.S. mayonnaise market, which is estimated to be worth $2 billion annually, according to market-research firm Euromonitor. That's more than twice the size of the ketchup market. Hampton Creek didn't return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment Tuesday morning. The company told The Wall Street Journal that it doesn't mislead consumers because it advertises the absence of eggs as a benefit. But a marketing professor hired by Unilever to survey consumers found in an online survey that more than half of thought Just Mayo was mayonnaise when they saw the label. The professor said in a document filed last week that 822 consumers participated in the research. Just Mayo is the first product from Hampton Creek, a San Francisco-based startup that touts the backing of Microsoft (MSFT) founder Bill Gates and Li Ka-shing, Asia's wealthiest person. Just Mayo is available at Dollar Tree (DLTR), Whole Foods Market (WFM) and Kroger (KR) stores, among other locations. Hellmann's celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Mayonnaise originated in France in the 1700s, when a chef seeking to make a creamy sauce combined oil and egg yolks.

Jobless Claims Continue to Fall; Wholesale Stockpiles Surge

Top Penny Stocks To Buy For 2015

Decrease In Unemployment Claims Shows Economy Continuing To Improve Spencer Platt/Getty Images WASHINGTON -- The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to nearly its lowest level since before the 2007-09 recession, a sign of growing steam in the U.S. labor market. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 287,000 in the week ended Oct. 4, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists had expected claims to rise. The data adds to the view that strength is building in the U.S. economy. "The labor market is entering into a potential boom," said Joseph LaVorgna, chief U.S economist at Deutsche Bank (DB) in New York. Still, Federal Reserve officials remain concerned about persistently low rates of inflation and aren't seen in a rush to hike interest rates with the economies of key trading partners flagging. A separate report showed U.S. wholesale inventories rose by the most in four months in August, a sign the economy may have grown more than expected in the third quarter. Many economists think the economy grew at an annual rate of around 3 percent in the July-September period, much faster than average rates over the last few years. U.S. stocks opened lower as investors took profits after a big rally Wednesday that had been fueled by minutes of the Fed's last policy meeting, which suggested an interest rate hike could be delayed because of growing concerns on the international outlook. The U.S. dollar, which had been on a long run up through last week, slid to a three-week low against the Japanese yen Thursday, while yields on U.S. government debt rose modestly. Jobless claims have fallen steadily since the nation emerged from the recession and are currently lower than they were before the country's economic crisis began. Indeed, the level of claims last week was just 8,000 above a 14-year low reached in July. The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, fell 7,250 to 287,750, its lowest level since 2006. The Labor Department said there were no special factors influencing the state level claims data. The report showed the number of people still receiving benefits after an initial week of aid dropped 21,000 to 2.38 million in the week ended Sept. 27. "The gradual improvement in continuing claims is particularly encouraging and is consistent with recent declines in the unemployment rate, suggesting that unemployed workers continue to find gainful employment," said Gennadiy Goldberg, U.S. strategist at TD Securities in New York. -.

When most people think of electric vehicle stocks, they probably think of troubled Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) or one of the several Chinese stocks active in the space, but North America based large cap Magna International Inc (NYSE: MGA) and small caps Polypore International, Inc (NYSE: PPO), UQM Technologies Inc (NYSEMKT: UQM) and Green Automotive Company (OTCMKTS: GACR) are all players, one way or the other, in the electric vehicle space that most investors have probably overlooked or just aren aware of. Of course, we can argueabout whether or not purely electric vehicles or some sort of hybrid vehicles are the way of the future, but what cannot be argued about is the fact that the following electric vehicle stocks are at the forefront of EV orhybrid technology and design:

JH: There are several companies that are in production that we follow in the U.S., such as Cameco Corp. (CCJ). Cameco produces at the Smith Ranch-Highland in the Powder River Basin. There's Uranium One, also in the Powder River Basin. There's Uranium Energy Corp. (UEC). A few near-term producers are rapidly coming online. Ur-Energy Inc. (URG) is one company we like in Wyoming.

If you listened to my bullish calls from December 27th and/or February 24th about Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG), then congratulations - you're now up as much as 50%, depending on when you stepped into a trade, and which stock you chose. Now get out. See, as well as URZ and URG have done and are doing (URRE not so much), it looks like the short-term rally I first spotted a little more than a couple of months ago has fully run its course, and now these names are setting up a pullback.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

You know, were it just Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE) or just Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG) or just Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ) making a decided bullish move, I might be able to dismiss it. Similarly, if URZ had only been moving higher for one or two days (or only URG or only URRE), it might be easy to not be impressed. Neither of those situations has been the actual case, however. All three stocks have been moving upward for several days now, quite a bit, on noticeably higher volume. There's something "going on", as it were, and if prior group-wide movements are any clue, it's the kind of move worth tapping into.
