Intel Has a Chip on Its Shoulder This Earnings Season

Earnings season has begun, and next Tuesday Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) will release its latest quarterly results. The key to making smart investment decisions with stocks reporting earnings is to anticipate how they'll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever surprises inevitably arise. That way, you'll be less likely to make an uninformed, knee-jerk decision.

As the dominant manufacturer of microprocessor chips for the PC market, Intel has enjoyed huge success ever since the PC became popular decades ago, and it earned a spot in the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) during the tech boom of the late 1990s. But the move toward mobile technology has threatened to leave Intel behind. Can the company make good on its promise to find similarly innovative products for the mobile market, or will it slowly fade into technology history? Let's take an early look at what's been happening with Intel over the past quarter and what we're likely to see in its quarterly report.

Will Intel finally get moving in mobile this quarter?
Analysts haven't been sure what to make of Intel's earnings prospects in recent months. They've raised their calls for the just-ended quarter by $0.02 per share, but they've made a $0.03 per-share cut in their consensus for the full 2013 year. The stock has also been quite erratic, rising 4% since early January following one of the weakest performances in the Dow last year.

Value investors have gravitated to Intel's stock recently just because its earnings multiples have gotten so low. That in turn reflects the pessimism that many investors feel about Intel's growth prospects. The latest figures on PC shipments showed a double-digit percentage plunge, which reawakened fears that the demise of the PC industry may come sooner than expected, accelerating the decline of Intel's core PC chip market.

But Intel has taken aim at the smartphone and mobile market, and although it's been slow out of the gate, it has some advantages over its rivals. ARM Holdings (NASDAQ: ARMH  ) has gathered a client list that features most of the primary device-makers in the world, and its architecture has largely been accepted as the mobile standard. But Intel's investment in mobile manufacturing will result in smaller chips, with 22-nanometer design displacing its competitors' products. Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM  ) is widely seen as the leading-edge chip designer, but its current designs are based on 28-nanometer models. Intel has a huge opportunity to use its technological prowess to take a big step forward.

Hot Oil Companies To Invest In Right Now

One immediate hope for investors is that Intel's new Haswell mobile chip will turn out to be a hit. With the power to handle PC-sized applications on tablets, the chip promises better graphics without reduced performance or battery life. Still, with other manufacturers having gotten a big head-start in working their way into the architectures of popular mobile products, Intel faces an uphill battle.

In Intel's quarterly report, your focus should be on two things: the speed with which the PC chip market is deteriorating and the progress Intel has made in developing viable mobile chips. Unless the company deals with those issues first and foremeost, forays into other markets will play only a secondary role in determining the stock's future.

Best Stocks To Buy For 2014

From the outset, behavioral finance has focused on documenting the irrational financial behavior of human beings, and even today, says Daniel Crosby, founder and president of Atlanta-based behavioral finance consulting firm, IncBlot, the science is still largely centered on highlighting the mistakes people make with respect to financial planning.

Crosby believes that people—financial advisors and the general investing public—have begun to tire of the seemingly endless litany of flaws (“I have counted 117 well-documented irrationalities or behavioral biases,” he said.) that behavioral finance has highlighted and are ready for something else.

“We’re at a point where behavioral finance needs to go in a new direction, one that answers the questions ‘so what’ and ‘now what,’” he said.

Crosby set up IncBlot to try to answer those questions and to be a part of what he believes is the important and necessary transition of behavioral finance from theory to practice—a change that will allow financial practitioners to use the science in a more meaningful, useful and realistic manner.

The HeartWare Ventricular Assist System (the HeartWare System), which includes a ventricular assist device (VAD), or blood pump, patient accessories and surgical tools, is designed to provide circulatory support for patients in the advanced stage of heart failure. The core of the HeartWare System is a continuous flow blood pump, the HVAD Pump, which is a full-output device capable of pumping up to 10 liters of blood per minute. The HeartWare System is designed to be implanted adjacent to the heart, avoiding the abdominal surgery generally required to implant similar devices. In August 2012, it acquired World Heart Corporation. As of December 31, 2012, the HeartWare System has been implanted outside of the United States at approximately 168 health care sites in 28 countries. Proprietary Pump Technology

The HeartWare System is full-output centrifugal pump designed to be implanted in the chest, directly adjacent to the heart. At the core of the Company technology platform is its hybrid system for suspending the impeller, which is the only moving part within the pump. The impeller is suspended within the pump housing by the opposing forces of passive magnets and hydrodynamic thrust generated by the pump impeller, which circulates a cushion of

blood. Once power is applied to the device and the impeller begins to rotate, there are no points of mechanical contact within the pump, thus providing a completely wearless pumping system.

The HeartWare System

The HeartWare System consists of the HVAD Pump, a small, permanently implantable VAD, patient accessories and surgical tools. The HVAD Pump is capable of generating up to 10 liters of blood flow per minute. With a displaced v! olume of only 50 cubic centimeters and a mass of 140 grams, the HVAD Pump is the only full-output pump implantable in the pericardial space, directly adjacent to the heart. It is also the only pump designed to be implanted above the diaphragm in all eligible patients.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another earnings short-squeeze prospect is Bazaarvoice (BV), a provider of social commerce software solutions, which is set to release numbers on Wednesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Bazaarvoice to report revenue of $44.12 million on a loss of 8 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Bazaarvoice is very high at 14.4%. That means that out of the 41.18 million shares in the tradable float, 6.33 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 11.6%, or by 656,000 shares. If the bears are caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of BV could rip sharply higher post-earnings as the shorts rush to cover some of their bets.

From a technical perspective, BV is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation pattern for the last month and change, with shares moving between $10.15 on the downside and $11.50 on the upside. Any high-volume move above the upper-end of its recent range post-earnings could trigger a major breakout trade for shares of BV.

If you're bullish on BV, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $11.35 to $11.50 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 661,797 shares. If that breakout triggers, then BV will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $13 to $14 a share.

I would simply avoid BV or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below its 50-day at $10.34 a share and then below some key near-term support at $10.15 a share with high volume. If we get that m

There are four criteria used to determine how profitable a company is. Of these four criteria, Facebook satisfies three, making it appear to be a very profitable company. Those criteria are as follows:

Return on Assets (ROA): This figure is essentially the company net income. In order to meet this criterion in Piotroski method, the ROA must be a positive number. With an ROA of 0.40, Facebook meets this requirement and receives a 1.
Cash Flow from Operations (CFO): This tells investors how much the company is earning from its regular business activities (production, sales, etc). It must be a positive number in order to receive a score of 1. Facebook cash flow from operations was $1,612 meaning it definitely satisfies this requirement and receives a 1.
Change in ROA: In order for the profitability of a company to be considered sustainable, it must show a steadily increasing return on its assets. To calculate this, we take Facebook current ROA of 0.40 and subtract the previous year ROA (15.80). This gives us a difference of -15.40, showing a decrease. Therefore, Facebook does not meet this requirement and receives a 0.
Accrual: This criterion simply checks to make sure that the company cash flow from operations is higher than its return on assets. As we can see above, Facebook CFO of $1,612 is definitely greater than its ROA of 0.40 meaning that it receives a score of 1.

Which Companies Won the Christmas Device Sales Battle?

For technology companies, the holiday season represents more than just a huge sales opportunity. This "most wonderful time of the year" provides them an opportunity to solidify market share, reboot a struggling product line, or see where they stand among peers.

This year, the holiday shopping rush helped one sales leader fortify its No. 1 position while showcasing a surprising contender and exposing a number of weaker companies as well. It also showed a change in the buying patterns of consumers, which may impact what devices are made going forward.

Apple was the leader
If you had any doubts of whether Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  )  still holds a dominant position in phones and tablets, the company's holiday sales total should put them to rest. The company accounted for 51% of all new device activations worldwide between December 19 and 25, according to Flurry, a data analysis service owned by Yahoo!.

Samsung (NASDAQOTH: SSNLF  ) was a distant second with 18% of new activations.

"To put this in perspective, for every Samsung devices that was activated, Apple activated 2.9 devices," according to Flurry's report. "While the holidays in general and Christmas in particular are not the sole indicator of the smartphone market share and trends, it is safe to say that Apple's newly released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have had a blockbuster holiday season, despite a lackluster holiday season for the consumer electronics industry."

Flurry, which said that Christmas Day is the biggest of the year for new device activations, compiles its data by tracking more than 600,000 apps.

Microsoft can claim victory, too
In some ways, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) won the holidays just by managing to have its devices -- mostly phones marketed under the Nokia brand -- break out at all. The company had 5.8% of new activations, which falls well behind Microsoft and Samsung but makes it the clear No. 3.

From all other manufacturers, only Sony (1.6%) and LG (1.4%) had more than a 1% share. That's good news for Microsoft, which has struggled to establish Windows Phone as an iOS and Android alternative. It also suggests the company is making some headway in its efforts to market mid and low-priced smartphones as an alternative to high-end devices.

Tablets are becoming phablets?
While the overall market share for tablets -- if you count large ones, small ones, and phablets -- has remained about the same since 2012, phablets are cannibalizing their larger cousins. In 2012, tablets accounted for 36% of new device activations -- with about 92% of that segment coming from large and small tablet activations. In 2013, that started to shift, with tablets overall delivering 33% of total activations but 88% came from large and small devices.

Most recently in 2014, consumers showed a real desire for phablets as overall tablet activations bounced back up to 35% of all devices, but large and small tablets now comprise just 63% of that segment. A big part of that trend is likely the iPhone 6 Plus, which Flurry said was a top five most-activated device, as well as Samsung's Galaxy Note line.

"The phablet's popularity seems to come at the expense of full-sized tablets and to a lesser extent small tablets, Flurry wrote. "Even so, the medium-sized phone is still favored by most consumers and saw the largest share of device activations this Christmas."

Source: Flurry.

Trends are becoming clear
Whether Microsoft, Sony, or LG can improve their prospects is yet to be seen, but the other industry players like Xiaomi, Huawei, and HTC have a lot of catching up to do. It's also clear that consumers are looking for larger screens on their phones -- probably to avoid carrying a separate tablet.

This was a holiday season where the rich -- Apple and Samsung -- got richer and only one other company, Microsoft, has anything to celebrate. The major question for next year is whether the Windows-maker can grow beyond a niche audience to become a true alternative, and if that happens, who the market share will come from.

Apple, on the other hand, has received full justification for its decision to enter the phablet market with the iPhone 6 Plus and continued validation for the iPad mini. Those devices may have poached iPad sales, but if they did not exist, it seems likely Apple would have lost market share as consumers flocked to competitors for their holiday shopping.

Flowserve Corp. (1.1%) (FLS)($70.52 - NYSE) is one of the largest global pump companies, serving the petroleum, chemical, and power industries. The company products include engineered and industrial pumps, automated and control valves, actuators, and seals. About 40% of FLS revenues are derived from the oil and gas industry, and should benefit from the refurbishment of the aging refineries in developed countries and the first time build out of the infrastructure in developing nations around the world. Further, oil companies are bringing up dirtier, heavier, and harder to access crude from thousands of feet below ground, as the cleaner, lighter, and easier to obtain crude that is closer to the surface is depleted. This demands more highly engineered pumps, valves, and seals that can work under very high pressure, high temperature, or underwater, boding well for FLS products.
