    No. 2: Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP  ) , up 68.4%
Like Tallgrass Energy Partners, Phillips 66 Partners is one of those investments that gives investors exposure to the energy space without the nausea that can come from volatile oil prices. However, this is a much more niche investment than other MLPs since it is a spinoff of Phillps 66's pipeline and logistics assets. So far, the partnership doesn't own very much, just a few refine! d product pipelines from Phillip 66's refineries as well as a crude import terminal and pipeline.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Consider Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP), which owns some of the midstream logistics assets of its sponsor, the refiner Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX). Ordinarily we might consider such a midstream MLP to be a fairly conservative investment, but PSXP exploded out of the gate after its IPO and has continued to be one of the most lucrative MLPs since its IPO. In just the first half of this year, the unit price rose 110%. As the unit price rose and the yield continued to shrink, price targets were raised again and again by brokerage houses.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Likewise, Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP) has risen 154% since its IPO just under a year ago, pushing the yield down to 1.45%. So why do investors keep bidding the price higher with the yield so low? Because they have very aggressive expectations of  how the partnership will grow its distribution. Anything that falls short of those aggressive expectations could result in a sharp pullback in the unit price.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

The top performing MLP of the first half was Emerge Energy Services (NYSE: EMES), a supplier of sand used in hydraulic fracking (+146 percent). The second leading gainer with a gain of 110 percent was Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP), which IPO'd a year ago and consists of midstream assets dropped down from its sponsor, Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX).

British radar engineer Geoffrey Dummer first made public the concept of integrated circuits on May 7, 1952. This was still years before practical transistor-based electronics would hit the consumer market, but the notion caught on with two very talented engineers: Robert Noyce, founder of Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS  ) , and Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments. Working independently, the two men would help build the entire semiconductor industry from the ground up, using Dummer's concepts as a starting point.

Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce were part of the founding team behind Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS  ) in 1957. In 11 years, the two men would forge legendary hardware-engineering careers. They developed the first practical integrated circuits, created the most widely recognized "law" of computing power, and built the chips that helped man land on the moon. But after 11 years, the two chip makers left the plodding Fairchild behind for even greater ambitions. On July 18, 1968, they founded Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) , a company that would quickly and vastly eclipse their former employer.

The Atari 2600 launched at a cost of $199 (equal to about $750 today) in the fall of 1977. The console's first two years on the market almost sent it the way of the Osyssey, since Atari managed to sell less than one million units by the end of 1978. However, Fairchild Semiconductor's (NYSE: FCS  ) decision to abandon console gaming in 1979 (it had actually beaten Atari to market with the Channel F in 1976, but sold fewer units than the 2600), coupled with the launch of a Space Invaders cartridge for the 2600 in 1980, gave Atari a clear path to huge sales. Two years later, the 2600 had reached ten million households, and console gaming had a foothold. Atari was briefly the crown jewel in Warner's entertainment empire, but this success wouldn't last.

Advisors' Opinion:

Universal Display (OLED) is another company that is changing its ticker symbol (on 6/24, from PANL). My research indicates that this stock is trading well below fair value, which should limit risk, though the volatility figures and revenue predominantly from Samsung (SSNLF.PK) argue otherwise. The reason for the price slump is probably a scale back of sales estimates for the Galaxy S IV, but since Samsung will sell all the OLED displays it can produce, regardless of the devices they go into, this reaction seems unwarranted.

Shares of Universal Display (NASDAQ: OLED  ) have fallen more than 15% since the company reported disappointing earnings in May, but Mr. Market may have gotten this one wrong, says Fool contributor Steve Symington in the following interview with the Fool's Alison Southwick.

Best Retail Stocks To Buy For 2014

You can be forgiven if you've never heard of Fairway Group Holdings (NASDAQ: FWM  ) . The company is responsible for Fairway Market, a small chain of high-end grocery stores currently in and around the greater New York City metropolitan area.

Back to the beginning
Fairway dates back to the 1930s, when it started out as a small local market, and today it still maintains its small footprint with only 12 stores in what's estimated to be a $30 billion food retail market in the greater New York City metropolitan area; however management has some big growth plans in mind. This probably helps explain its recent IPO in April of this year. And since then, the stock has been on a tear, rising 58% and counting.

Is opportunity knocking?
While Fairway is tiny today, management sees the Northeast market (from New England to the District of Columbia) ultimately supporting up to 90 stores along with an additional 300 nationwide. So is it reasonable to believe that the market can support 400 or so Fairway stores? Possibly. Let's take a look at some other well-known names to see how they stack up:

Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) fell 8.5% to $72.95 on heavy volume after the company reported fiscalthird-quarter earnings of $1.12 a share on revenue of $2.87 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected $1.15 a share on revenue of $2.88 billion.

Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. (BBBY) shares fell 6.2% after the houseware retailer forecast for the current quarter fell short of forecasts, and it posted a profit and revenue decline for the fiscal fourth quarter.

On Thursday, Bed, Bath & Beyond (BBBY) after its earnings forecast disappointed. Citigroup Kate McShane also downgraded the stock from Buy to Neutral on the news, lowering her target price from $85 to $72.

McShane writes that excluding the effect of her conservative assumptions for share repurchases, earnings per share growth looks to be virtually flattish for the next two years. The announcement Thursday night indicates that he company is facing a 2nd straight year of top-line deceleration driven by both slowing new store openings and modest comp growth. Moreover, she writes, she doesn see an inflection point for gross margin in the next year, as she had previously thought possible, and she is concerned about the ngoing increasing negative impact from couponing./p>

She notes that while investments in technology may improve Bed, Bath omni-channel experience, this strategy will continue to weigh on EPS, and she now likes Williams Sonoma (WSM) as a better way to get exposure to favorable trends in home furnishings.

    Her new estimates:

Lowering our FY15 EPS from $5.36 to $5.04 e are taking down our EPS estimates on a slower comp environment over the next few years which will make it more difficult to leverage expenses, especially in light of continued investments in the omni-channel experience. Plus, the mix shift toward lower margin products may persist and the couponing reliance appears to be a permanent overhang. Lastly, the square footage expansion story for FY15 was less than we had expected and the opportunity to get a sales lift from square footage growth may be waning.

West Marine (Nasdaq: WMAR) is an undervalued retailer.  The company is going through a change in focus from a bricks and mortar boat product retailer to a fully integrated retail and wholesale business through bricks and clicks, targeting the boating and water enthusiast customer.   Recent results have been affected by a severe rainy and cool spring which hurt boat usage and delayed the start of the season.  The company has accelerated cash investments to build larger more productive stores and expand its ecommerce abilities, consequently affecting free cash flow short term.  The stock lacks sponsorship as there is only one research report written on the company by a small boutique firm.  The stock trades at only book value despite the company being the leading industry player with a solid balance sheet and significant net cash position.

From a technical perspective, PENN jumped modestly higher here right! above some near-term support at $54.71 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of PENN within range of triggering a breakout trade. That trade will hit if PENN manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $57.44 to some past resistance at $58 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in PENN as long as it's trending above Monday's low $55.65 or above more support at $54.71 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that this near or above 824,334 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then PENN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $59.93. Any high-volume move above $59.93 will then give PENN a chance to hit $65.

Restaurant Apps That Will Save You Money

Hot Sliver Companies To Invest In Right Now

Restaurant Apps That Will Save You Money Cultura Creative/AlamyApps can help you find deals on restaurant meals. Every now and then, it's nice to go out and grab a lunch at a cafe or go out to dinner with a friend and catch up on life. But the one thing that stops people from going out too much is that the costs add up quickly. One year, my husband and I spent over $10,000 at restaurants. My husband is a chef, but still, that's a lot of dough. After looking at our spending, we had to sit down and create a budget for eating out because we should have saved up some of that money for the kids we have today. We decided that we still wanted to eat out, but we needed to be smart about it. We went to grand openings that offered free food, searched high and low on Groupon (GRPN) and Living Social and opted to try the Happy Hour menu -- something we never considered before. Once we got familiar with all the ways that we could save money and still indulge in our favorite dishes at local restaurants, we started looking at apps that would cut our time in half while scoring the same discounts. Here are three of our favorite apps: Savored (savored.com): In recent years, Groupon has led the deal movement by securing incredible discounts at your favorite neighborhood restaurants and other establishments. It only makes sense that the company would come up with an app that would help you save money and make reservations at your local restaurants for free. My city is Los Angeles which definitely has a happening restaurant scene, but there were only 66 restaurants available (New York City had 360 restaurants and Chicago had 74 available). Savings range from 15 to 50 percent. You pick your party size and date and the discount will be shown. You make the reservation and you just have to show up to the establishment and the rest is taken care of, but make sure you read the fine print because most restaurants will add gratuity automatically. Scout Mob (scoutmob.com): We all like to save a few bucks here and there, but many of us probably don't carry a coupon with us at all times for a specific establishment. This app allows you to add a deal, which gives you 50 percent off at a participating business. Once you add it, you just have to show your phone screen to get the discount. Most places I looked up had a maximum $10 savings, so to get the best bang for your buck, you would spend a maximum of $20. While it is easy to use, I was bummed to see that there were only five participating restaurants "near" me, which were all 15 plus miles away. Yes, the deals are amazing, since you get 50 percent off your purchase, but they need to add more places to make it more enticing for people to actually install the app. If you're a New Yorker, there are 149 establishments to choose from, which is a better sell. The app is free so it doesn't hurt to get it since you can save money at a participating business you may already frequent. Blackboard Eats (blackboardeats.com): If you want a detailed review of a restaurant you want to visit and occasionally get some incredible deals, this app will do that for you. You can login to the app and tap on "Guide" to find restaurants near you. You can scan the list and find the restaurant you would like to visit. Once you open it up, you get a really detailed review of the establishment. For someone like me who likes to know the 411 before I get to the restaurant, this is perfect. Plus, you can tap on "Specials" to see if there are any current or upcoming specials that you can get. When it's available, you can get a percentage off your bill or get something for free. Like most users on Android, I had an issue logging into the app. Once I reset my password from my computer, I had no issues and it worked nicely for me. The app is free and if you're a foodie who likes to research restaurants beforehand and get an occasional deal, it's is definitely worth it. .

Europe̢۪s Nyet to Russian Gas Could Boost US Exports

Print Friendly

Even as the crisis in Ukraine hits a lull with the election of Petro Poroshenko, a pro-Western politician who may declare martial law in the country's eastern provinces to restore stability, Europeans clearly aren't ready to declare more than an uneasy truce with Moscow. The rhetoric has cooled and the Russian military appears to be pulling back from the Ukrainian border, but the European Union (EU) and its allies haven't begun rescinding sanctions. In fact, they seem to be stepping them up.

Europe has long depended on Russia for its energy needs; nearly a third of the EU's natural gas comes from Russia. Half of that is piped in through Ukraine, and since 2009 the EU has been working to diversify those distribution channels. The goal was originally to find ways around Ukraine to avoid its occasional flow-disrupting spates with Russia. To that end, in late 2012 building the South Stream pipeline began.

The 620-mile pipe would allow gas to flow beneath the Black Sea from Russia, then transit through Bulgaria and on to Greece, Italy and Austria. At a cost of about $24 billion, the project would essentially bypass the Russian-Ukrainian equation and allow Moscow a freer hand in dealing with what it views as an unruly satellite state. While the Ukrainians weren't happy about that diversion of gas, the new pipeline was seen as a key element in stabilizing Russian-European relations.

Unfortunately for the Russians, who were emboldened by their successful land grab during the 2008 Russo-Georgian war, they overstepped the bounds of European tolerance by seizing Ukraine's Crimea region.

While Europe relies on Russia for about a third of its natural gas supply, half of Russian federal revenues come from the sale of oil and gas. If Europe is willing to take the pain, it can put a serious dent in Russian revenues by moving away from Russian gas. And it appears that Europe might be willing to do just! that, issuing what amounts to a stop-work order on the South Stream project.

This week the EU demanded that Bulgaria halt construction of the pipeline, saying it suspected violations in regulations on how construction contracts were awarded. Since Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007, it is bound to follow those regulations and has a month to respond to the complaint.

The EU had already frozen high level diplomatic talks with Russia over approval concerns, which focused primarily on Bulgarian legislation that essentially allowed the Russian natural gas giant Gazprom (OTC: OGZPY) to circumvent the bloc's rules on competitive bidding processes. But the bid issues are really a red herring. This is simply a wake-up call to check Russian aggression.

Despite the stop-work order, I suspect this is just slow-pedaling. The European commission responsible for the project is headed by short-timers unlikely to scuttle the deal. In fact, the timing of the stop-work order essentially guarantees that the next round of commissioners will be the primary decision makers. The next commissioners will likely find a way to continue construction of the pipeline.

Energy policy is a key way for Europe to constrain Russia's expansionist impulses, at least for now. In the meantime though, Europe will be looking to diversify its supply and Russia will be looking for new customers. In fact, Russia has already signed a deal to send 38 billion cubic meters of gas to China annually, beginning in 2018, and a second pipeline deal with the Chinese is already in the works.

This bodes well for the future of American natural gas. US policy makers will be keen to support our European allies by moving ahead with liquefied natural gas export terminals. While that wouldn't totally wean Europe from Russian natural gas, our exports would make a dent. That would be a boon for American producers such as Cimerax Energy (NYSE: XEC). It will also provide a boost for companies such as Cheniere Energy (NYSE: LNG), whose Sa! bine Pass! liquefied natural gas terminal is already being converted to accommodate bi-directional flows. Its Gulf Coast location also provides relatively easy access to European markets.

While the current spat between Russia and the Europe doesn't mark a sudden about-face in any nation's energy policy, it could ultimately create a big market for our glut of natural gas.
