Bookseller Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS ) is rolling out what it calls the Nook Color's "largest-ever software update," adding more than 100 feature enhancements to the e-reader, including access to Netflix streaming video services.
With the Nook Color v1.4 update, device owners can now download the Netflix application to view full-length films and television shows on the e-reader's seven-inch VividView display. The Nook Color also adds support for social movie site Flixster, enabling consumers to stream their DVD and Blu-ray purchases by leveraging the cloud-based UltraViolet platform. Additional multimedia services are in the pipeline.
Barnes & Noble adds that the new update touts faster, easier access to its complete digital catalog of more than 2.5 million color and interactive books, magazines, children's books, comics and graphic novels. In addition, the retailer's Nook Apps library continues to add hundreds of new titles each week.
Barnes & Noble will begin rolling out the free Nook Color v1.4 update via Wi-Fi next week. The Nook Color is priced at $199.
Last month, Barnes & Noble unveiled the companion Nook Tablet, promising a wealth of e-books, mobile applications and HD video content in its bid to rival Amazon.com's Kindle Fire as well as Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL ) market-leading iPad. Priced at $249, which is $50 more than the Kindle Fire, the Nook Tablet, boasts twice the RAM of its competitor and double the storage, offering consumers access to millions of books as well as more than 250 periodicals, many with interactive features. The Nook Tablet also preloads Hulu Plus and Netflix video services as well as streaming music solution Pandora, offering access to thousands of other applications as well.
