Best Buy Debuts Video Rental Service With Sonic’s CinemaNow

Best Buy (BBY) today launched a much-anticipated video streaming service, which will provide same-day instant access to newly released movies and TV shows. The service is offered in partnership with the CinemaNow unit of Sonic Solutions (SNIC). The service will be offered first on new Blu-Ray players and home theater system from LG Electronics; later this year, Best Buy will expand the service to “an array of other devices from other manufacturers,” including its own in-store Insignia line.

This isn’t quite what Netflix (NFLX) offers; the service does not require a subscription, and instead offers titles on a pay-per-view basis. Note that Sonic also powers the Blockbuster (BBI) On Demand service.

SNIC is up 23 cents, or 1.8%, to $12.80.
