This week, we'll dive back into the high-growth tech sector and have a look at why processing and graphics chip maker NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA ) makes for a delectable income play for investors.
- [By Evan Niu]
Under the hood, Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM ) has indeed displaced NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA ) as the processor vendor, with the second-generation Nexus 7 sporting a Snapdragon S4 Pro instead of a Tegra. While NVIDIA had delayed its Tegra 4 in order to focus on its Tegra 4i, the new Nexus 7's later-than-expected launch puts it within reach of NVIDIA's Tegra 4 schedule (ramping this quarter).

NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA ) , one of the biggest mobile-application processor companies, gained 20%. You know a company is facing some challenges when articles about it refer to "hail Marys" in their titles. NVIDIA recently delayedits handheld gaming hardware launch, and took a hit -- it droppedthe price for it, too. Its entry into the mobile IP licensing business has some hopeful, and many like its strong position in gaming, though others balk at its forward P/E near 16.

Late last week, chip stock Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (NYSE: AMD) announced a surprise restructuring initiativethat worth taking a closer look at now that some of the dust has settled that might also be relevant for investors in chip making competitors like Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA). Firstly, I should mention that we had an open position in Advanced Micro Devices in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio from last summer up until late January when we locked in a small loss because our SCN EO is a trading portfolio rather than a long term buy and hold portfolio. Moreover,AMD shares had sunk yet again after the company reported earnings a repeat performance of what happened after the last three previous earnings reports. However, we have recently re-added Advanced Micro Devices to our SCN EO portfolio because the companycontinues to perform and with thetechnological advances in the gaming space, they should bewell positioned for forward growth in the quarters ahead. With that in mind, here is a look at the recent news about AMD and especially the just announced restructuring:

What: Shares of communications chip maker Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM ) sank 15% today after its quarterly results and guidance disappointed Wall Street.

Broadcom (BRCM) and NVIDIA (NVDA) are two chipmakers making solid moves. The two companies are seeing strong growth in their businesses. As a result, investors should definitely take a closer look at them.

Ashraf Eassa: I've been bullish on chip maker Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM ) for quite a while now. Although some investors might be disappointed that the company wasn't able to become the mobile processor powerhouse that the company itself had hoped, the remaining business continues to be incredibly compelling.

Close competitor NeoPhotonics (NYSE: NPTN ) soared 15% higher. Larger rival JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU ) jumped 7.9% to become the fastest gainer on the S&P 500. If Ciena can beat its own expectations in selling Internet backbone equipment to a bevy of major telecoms, its chief rivals must eventually follow suit. JDS is only one month removed from its latest quarterly report, which sent shares diving 7% overnight (but all was forgiven a week later). NeoPhotonics also reported in early May, but didn't make any waves then.
