Top 10 Media Companies To Buy Right Now

Believe it or not, when you get an email from an airline asking you to "rate your experience from your recent flight." the airline is watching closely.

As The Wall Street Journal discussed last month, the response rates to email surveys for flights can get as high as 20%, much higher than the standard email survey goal of 5%. Apparently, when folks have positive or negative experiences on an airline, they like to have their voices heard.

Net promoter scores
Designed by Bain & Company consultant Fred Reichheld, Net Promoter Scores, or NPS, are one of the most closely tracked metrics of these email surveys. In essence, the NPS measures how likely a flier is to recommend an airline to someone else, on a scale of 1 to 10.

According to the Journal, officials at Southwest (NYSE: LUV  ) and Virgin America monitor NPS results vigilantly. And executives from both JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) and Delta (NYSE: DAL  ) "are convinced NPS results correlate to company profits, since stronger loyalty means stronger ticket sales."

Early on Monday morning, Gannett (GCI) had its price target raised to $35 from $34 at FBR Capital. The ratings company also affirmed that Gannett is a “Top Pick.”

Gannett, a publishing and broadcasting company that operates in the U.S. and the U.K., currently has a price of $29.76, and FBR’s new target suggests an 18% upside.

FBR analyst William Bird had the following comments about GCI’s PT raise: “Based on our analysis, we estimate that Gannett’s spectrum is worth approximately $2.2 billion, or $9 per share, roughly doubling in value from theacquisitionof BLC (i.e., pre-deal valuation of ~$1.1 billion). Separately, we are lowering our 2014 EPS estimate by $0.07 to reflect the previously announced sale of three stations to MDP (note: an expected midyear close means that the stations will not be in operating results from January 1, but the proceeds will not be received until midyear). We are increasing our price target to $35 from $34 to reflect shareholder accretion from the sale. We like Gannett’s improving business mix, growth profile, and ability to drive growth with its own propeller through higher retrans, synergies, and potential TV acquisitions.”

Gannett stock was inactive in pre-market trading. So far this year, the company’s stock is up 0.61%.

AT&T purchase of DirecTV is very much a e toomerger following the $45 billion union of Comcast (CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (TWC) to form a TV and internet juggernaut. From the looks of things, it looks as if AT&T motivation was a fear of being left behind by its larger rivals. The move will massively expand AT&T pay TV presence; at 20 million, DirecTV has roughly four times as many TV subscribers as AT&T.

Comcast Corp.(CMCSA) is much more likely to work with Charter Communications Inc.(CHTR) on a bid for Time Warner Cable Inc.(TWC) than to pursue an offer on its own, said a person familiar with the situation–a major boost to Charter’s hopes of winning the takeover battle.

But wait -- there's more! In case you were wondering why DISH is so interested in wireless assets, you'd get another clue by glancing at satellite rival DIRECTV (NASDAQ: DTV  ) . The larger satellite operator is interested in buying all or part of online video specialist Hulu, which is currently owned by a cabal of Hollywood studios that don't always get along. DIRECTV would presumably boost its digital services with the Hulu bid, paving the way toward abandoning the costly satellite strategy in favor of a more direct digital streaming option.

News Corp. is a media and information services company that has recently spun-off of its very profitable entertainment segment. The company’sChief Executive Lex Fenwick, has left the company after two years in the job. The stock has been trading sideways over the last couple of months and is currently pulling back. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenues have been on the rise. However, investors have had mixed feelings about recent earnings announcements. Relative to its peers and sector, News Corp. has been a weak year-to-date performer. WAIT AND SEE what News Corp. does this quarter.

    Storyful acquired by News Corp.
It was an excellent decision by News Corp. (NASDAQ: NWSA  ) to acquire Storyful for $25 million. The company now has the resources to scale out much quicker in what will become a crowded market.

  • [By Jon Friedman]

The new News Corp. (NASDAQ: NWSA  ) has a lot to prove as a stand-alone company.

This News Corp. is the product of a split between the former media conglomerate also known as News Corp., which then consisted of one company containing ample entertainment, broadcasting, and print-media assets. When the old News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch chose to divide it into two separate companies, with trading commencing on July 1, the new News Corp. inherited the print-journalism assets, including The Wall Street Journal and theperennially money-bleedingNew York Post, as well as book publisher HarperCollins and Dow Jones (for which I worked, as a media columnist at MarketWatch, from 2007 till early this year).
