Hot Dow Dividend Companies For 2014

Our latest recommendation takes us to Macausia's Las Vegas; we've made big short-term gains with this stock in the past and I think we'll do so this time around as well, suggests global expert Nicholas Vardy, editor of Bull Market Alert.

Back in 2007, revenues for Las Vegas and Macau were pretty much equal. Today, Macau's gambling revenues have soared to six times those of Las Vegas.

That means Macau generated more revenues in 2012 ($35.6 billion) than the entire US gaming industry.

That includes Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and Indian casinosombined. Analysts at CLSA expect Macau's revenue to double to $77 billion by 2017. Put another way, Macau's growth alone is adding a new Las Vegas every year.

Melco Crown Entertainment Limited (MPEL) operates two casinos in Macau: a mass-market casino called City of Dreams in Cotai, and Altira, a VIP-focused casino. MPEL also owns 60% of Studio City in Cotai, which is scheduled to open in 2015.

Goldman Sachs boosted its rating on US Steel (X) to Buy from Sell, along with that of AK Steel (AKS) and Steel Dynamics (STLD). Axiom Capital Management’s Gordon Johnson responds with a great big “huh?” in regards to the US Steel upgrade, especially as it relates to OCTG–oil country tubular goods.

    Reuters

Here is what Goldman’sSal Tharani and Chelsea Bolton write about US Steel and OCTG:

…we see continued strength in the flat rolled markets in the upcoming seasonally strong steel demand period as another driver of the stock in the near term. By our estimate, closure of three steel plants owned by bankrupt RG Steel, and the permanent shut down of Hamilton plant by US Steel, has more than offset the new capacity additions in the flat rolled market since 2008. As demand improves through continued recovery in auto and industrial markets, and new OCTG capacities under construction in the US begin to ramp up, we see a market improvement in flat rolled steel demand making this market tight in the coming months, from over-supplied just a few months ago.

Now, here’s Johnson’s “huh.” He writes:

Goldman argument added OCTG capacity creates OCTG demand: Huh? AgainHuh? This is also among the most confusing/perplexing of the arguments made. One of X largest earnings contributors is its OCTG segment. The GS report argues that more OCTG capacity will create more OCTG demand. Huh? Rig counts create demand, not the build-out of OCTG capacity (this makes absolutely NO sense to me someone please correct me if I wrong here). Further, if more OCTG capacity is built, this is be a negative for X most profitable segment. Thus, I don see how this is a positive. This is one of the points I just did not get at all.

    Any thoughts?

On Friday, June 13 the Commerce Department released its monthly report on producer prices which is one measure used to gauge the direction of price inflation in the U.S. The May Producer Price Index (PPI) reading showed a decrease of 0.2% seasonally adjusted. The Producer Price Index is a significant market moving news release and the worse than expected results likely had an effect on the market downward turn for the week.

The merger between the two companies had been in the works since September, but hit many a bump on the road. The two major obstacles in the path were the Chinese regulations and the ongoing tax investigation regarding Nokia Indian plant, operating in Chennai. While China green-lighted the deal easily, the Indian authorities were less obliging. The end result is that the Indian facility was not a part of the acquisitions and will be retained by Nokia. Although Nokia has not announced any conclusive plans, the fact that it offered its 7500+ Indian workers early retirement scheme suggests that the plant may soon be shut down. Also, noticeably absent from the terms of the merger was the tate of the artSouth Korean plant in Masan. The deal closed for $7.5 billion. As previously decided, Nokia former CEO Stephen Elop will be reporting to Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella and will be appointed executive vice president of Microsoft Devices Group. He will be overseeing the division that, from hence on, will be in charge of expanding the business of Lumia smartphones and tablets, Xbox hardware, Perceptive Pixel (PPI) products and accessories. ATLANTA -- A credit card data breach has been detected that exposed guests at certain Marriott, Holiday Inn, Sheraton and other hotel properties to theft, hotel management firm White Lodging Services said Monday. The breach occurred at food and beverage outlets at 14 hotels, including some operated under the Westin, Renaissance and Radisson names, between March 20 and Dec. 16 last year, White Lodging said in a statement. The company said information subject to potential theft by cybercriminals included names and numbers on consumers' debit or credit cards, security codes and card expiration dates. Customers who used their cards at the affected outlets should review all statements from the time in question and consider placing fraud alerts on their credit files, White Lodging said. White Lodging wouldn't estimate how many card numbers might have been taken. Krebs on Security, the cybersecurity blog that first reported the breach Friday, said thousands of accounts had been compromised. The latest data breach comes after the FBI warned retailers last month to prepare for more cyber attacks after discovering about 20 hacking cases in the past year involving the same kind of malicious software used against Target (TGT) over the holiday shopping season. The incident involving Target, the No. 3 U.S. retailer, was one of the biggest retail cyber attacks in history. In a confidential, three-page report to retail companies the FBI described the risks posed by "memory-parsing" malware that infects point-of-sale systems, which include cash registers and credit-card swiping machines in checkout aisles. Restaurants and lounges affected by the White Lodging breach were at hotels in Chicago; Austin, Texas; Richmond, Va.; Plantation, Fla.; Denver; Boulder and Broomfield, Colo.; Louisville, Ky.; Erie, Pa.; Indianapolis; and Merrillville, Ind., the company said.
