Given the size of a potential acquisition of Lorillard would be quite large, we question how a bid from [Reynolds American] would be financed. Therefore, we think a more likely deal could be a merger between [Lorillard] and[Reynolds American] rather than an acquisition. Also, there has been speculation that British American Tobacco (BTI), which currently owns ~42% of[Reynolds American's] stock, could take a majority stake in[Reynolds American] after the standstill ends in July 2014. While we believe the most likely scenario is that [British American Tobacco] and[Reynolds American] could reach a strategic partnership to market/sell e-cigs globally, we wouldn rule out[British American Tobacco] taking a majority stake in [Reynolds American]. Furthermore, if this occurs,[British American Tobacco] could help finance a potential acquisition of [Lorillard].

Refining weakness common among oil majors
Shell is not the only oil major suffering from an underperforming downstream segment. In fact, all of its peers, including Total (NYSE: TOT ) , ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM ) , Chevron (NYSE: CVX ) , and BP (NYSE: BP ) , blamed weak refining margins for disappointing financial performances last year. Exxon's fourth-quarter downstream earnings plunged by $852millionto $916million, while Chevron's international downstream earnings plunged by nearly 80% to $125million.

At the same time, this is what makes Cheniere Energy such a difficult investment in 2014, it is still not generating any revenue from these ventures yet. Sure, the company receives some contract royalties from Total (NYSE: TOT ) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX ) from when its facilities were geared for LNG import, but in no way do they cover the capital expenditures necessary to get these facilities up and running.

As Apache attempts to reduce its debt, it doesn't plan on acquiring additional properties any time soon a departure from its previous strategy, which sought growth through international expansion. Instead, it plans to continue with its successful strategy of coaxing more oil out of its existing asset base. A shining example of its prowess in this respect is the Forties field in the North Sea, where Apache managed to boost production from 40,000 barrels a day to a peak of 70,000 barrels a day after acquiring the field from BP (NYSE: BP ) back in 2003.
