Google (GOOG) won a huge legal victory today, when U.S. District Court Judge Louis Stanton granted the company’s request for summary judgment in the Viacom (VIA) copyright infringement lawsuit against YouTube.
The company announced the decision today in a blog post.
Google said in the post that the court decision means YouTube is protected by the safe harbor provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act against copyright infringement claims.
As AllThingsD notes, Viacom said in a statement that it believes the decision is “fundamentally flawed and contract to the language” of the DMCA. Viacom said it will appeal “as soon as possible.”
