The Nasdaq edged up 0.7%, or 18 points, to 2474 during Friday afternoon trading as as strength across capital goods and retail sectors helped markets stage a modest rebound after the previous session's deep selloff.

Electronic Arts(ERTS) shares popped 2.2% to $21.21 after naming former Microsoft(MSFT) exec Rajat Taneja as its global chief technology officer. Taneja helped build Microsoft's consumer technology business, including services like Xbox Live and Windows Phone. Yahoo!(YHOO) shares jumped 4.6% to $14.63 after announcing a new service with Facebook that will let users see which Yahoo! news articles their friends have read. Yahoo! hopes the new feature will lead to users clicking on more articles. The hookup comes as the struggling Internet giant works to turn itself around following the departure of CEO Carol Bartz earlier in the month. Hewlett Packard(HPQ) shares fell 4.5% to $21.78 -- a new 52 week low -- after Thursday's announcement that Meg Whitman will replace Leo Apotheker as CEO.
