Rumors du Jour

Herewith, people, a few of the bits floating through the rumor space today:

Chuck Schwab (SCHW) is said to be mulling a bid to acquire Knight Capital Group(NITE). Briefing.com reports October 20 puts on Schwab are seeing interest this morning. Schwab shares are down 47 cents today, or 2.4%, at $19.02. Knight shares are down 19 cents, or .8%, to $22.52.

From TheFlyOnTheWall.com comes two juicy ones, a rumor that Merck (MRK) is interested in $666 million (market cap) therapeutics MannKind (MNKD), for a purported price of $14.50 per share. The Fly says Merck is reportedly trying to push aside the previous unnamed partner, “which trading desks speculate as Eli Lilly (LLY).”

Fly also reports that Omnicare (OCR) is rumored to be a target of drug-store chain Walgreen (WAG) for $35 per share. As The Fly notes, in July, Goldman Sachs (GS) issued a research report stating that M&A activity is likely to pick up in the healthcare industry and cited Omnicare as a potential takeover target.
