CNBC’s Herb Greenberg this morning took a look at the action in shares of Universal Display (PANL), the developer of organic light-emitting diode technology.
The stock is up $6.42, or 15%, at $50.85 on no immediate news, though it did get some favorable words earlier this week, and there has been speculation that Apple (AAPL) will eventually move to using OLED displays in its i-devices.
Greenberg makes reference to the “tug-of-war” on Monday between Piper Jaffray and Gabelli over the stock.
Greenberg notes that BSAF and Merck this week received a favorable ruling at a patent hearing in a German court relating to their challenge to Universal’s patents on its display technology.
Greenberg says he attempted to contact Universal about the matter but received no response.
“This is significant, because this is a patent company,” said Greenberg.
Greenberg advises investors look through Universal’s 10-K filings to see a history of patent challenges to its technology.
